Cuffs, How good of you to get the excitement started! :banana
I look forward to each SORUCK with great anticipation--the friends, the food, the fun, etc. And, if all goes well (I have given up on 'planning'...) maybe I will even get back there for the great event!
My other prob is that there is so many great activities and so many wonderful friends to see, it is hard to get fit all in such a short time.
In the meantime--looking forward to all the possibilities!
S:sun
Count Gungho and I in!! Can't wait!!! :banana

Just to let you all know, the NOC has changed it's reservation service. I can't book until the new rates come out and their new service goes online. Folks at the NOC say this will be mid-month and will let me know.

Hey Sly - Save a nametag for me please. SoRuck 2007 was my first hiker get-together and I didn't know a single person. Now, you could threaten to fire me and I'd still get my butt to the Ruck. Can't wait to catch up with everyone and meet some new folks excited about the trail!
It can't get here too soon... just 73 days!! :clap
Hey 1Pint! See you in January!
Hey 1Pint! See you in January!
Can't wait to see you & Gung Ho! :D Until then, happy hiking!
I recently spoke with the NOC, still waiting to hear for official reservations, but in the meantime, I've cleared the Google documents for the food for the weekend, and the raffle to benefit the ATC and ALDHA.
So far, I put up the James Hare 2-volume set "Hiking the Appalachian Trail" and Earl Shaffer's coffee table book, The Appalachian Trail: Calling Me Back to the Hills and a couple packs. I'll probably add a bunch of DVD's and some other stuff. If you have anything similar, or good used gear, we can sell as a donation, let me know.
Last year we raise nearly $150 for each organization. I'd like to double that this time and will be offering tickets online via Paypal for those that can't attend, at a later date.
I've updated directions on the website. www.soruck.net (http://www.soruck.net) Click on "How to help"

HAAAA!!!! I haven't been on since I posted last! Just saw this! Maybe I finally have a trail name hehehehe
O....That is SO your new trailname...DANCER!!!:D
I spoke with the NOC yesterday and they're finally taking reservations for 2009. I rented all the cabins and sent an email to those that stayed last year, urging them to get back in touch ASAP.
If anyone would like to be put on a list to try and get in on a cabin please PM me with your real name, trail name and email. Since I pay for the cabins up front, anyone staying in them needs to pay me directly. In the meantime, you could call NOC and reserve a spot in base camp with them, just remember to ask about their refund policy.
If you plan on staying in base camp, you can give them a call Monday during business hours and make reservations.
I urge you to check out the website linked in my sig. I've open to the Google docs for food, contributions to the raffle to benefit the ATC and ALDHA and if you'd like new, or used gear, you'd like to try and sell at the Ruck. Instructions are on the website.
Sly,I will help with that shuttle this coming year again to help.
Thanks Ron!
Someone asked me about getting a cabin with a hot tub and I just noticed something on the NOC website, with it's new online reservation system. Those cabins, with hot tubs, are 1.2 - 2.5 miles away from the main campus. If you'd like one of those, you'll have to call the NOC directly.
P.S. Cuffs is mad at me. What else is new? ;)

Atlanta or Knoxville are the two closest cities with any real airport. Not sure what Asheville, NC has. There was a bus station in Waynesville, NC, not sure if that is still active though. I would think you'd be able to get a ride from Atlanta or Knoxville pretty easily.

Most drive, but I did pick up a friend at the Asheville airport when I was living there. That's the closest airport. Check out flights to Atlanta. Get here by Thursday night and plan on leaving Monday night and I'll give you a ride.
Also, two cars (three people) drove down from Michigan last year. I'm not sure if they're making the trip again.

I'm thinking about coming but can't commit quite yet; but I'm wondering if you might have a segment on hammocking. I bought one at Trail Days and when I hiked in July, I think I did only a fair job of hanging it. I NEED some help/pointers!!!
Serial, if you can get back here to the D, we might be able to work something out.

Wait! There's a party in Cabin C? Last year everyone told me the party was on the porch at the Outfitter store. I waited out there in the cold for hours and nobody else showed up.
DWM, that's where you were all weekend? There's obviously some bad intel going 'round. Rumor has it there was sex too but, no one can recall getting any.

No, I had Orps two years ago, I have Rhode Island Red X White Leghorn crosses and Aracunas now. The Aracunas lay blue eggs, but some people are just freaked out by that.
Orps are prolific layers though, wish I had them this season.

And as far as activities at the SoRuck go, we could use better instruction on snipe hunting. I mean no offense to the folks who organized last year's hunt but I didn't catch a thing. Maybe the snipe were scared away by the rustling of the nylon bag? I had time to consider the whole process and I'll bet cotton or burlap bags were traditionally used.
Thanks to Ron for giving me the ride out to the hunt, though. That was nice. I would have been really tired if I had to walk 5 miles both ways.

Dang, I knew I left too early last year, I love a good snipe hunt. I'll be sure to bring my dog this year, she flush um out of the brush and right into the bag.
DWM- more traditional methods are better when it comes to snipe hunting, burlap over nylon anytime and a good string to tie the top of the bag will do just fine. Baiting the hunt area with sunflower seeds doesn't hurt your odds of getting your limit either
Now, I heard that Snipe populations were down due to an invastion of the northern species the "Mince" They're a spry creature, but go great in a pie!

I know Mince are scarce around the holiday season. The little creatures wiped out a crop of reindeer grain I had growing two seasons ago. I never did bag one, so no pie for me. ;)

Yes, it's high dollar, but we were late to the party and wanted to make sure we had a place to stay. If we can split the costs with someone else, great. If not, split between the two of us, it's not completely outrageous, and we'll have a place to cook our contributions to the weekend.
Speaking of contributions to the weekend. This may be a stupid question, but how many people should we be planning on? I looked through last year's thread, and it said 150. Looking at the lists, it doesn't look like anything is close to feeding that many. Does that mean that basically everything is still needed?

There's usually 100-125 there at any one time. I deleted last years food contributions (I should have saved before) but if 30-40 people bring something that usually enough. I don't think anyone has ever gone hungry. Of course, those that don't bring anything shouldn't expect to eat. ;)

I applied the new rules once, but couldn't view the video on the home page on my own IE, when I did, so I reverted back. Now, every once in a while, it reminds me to apply the new rules.
It could also be about the menu on the left hand side.
Anyway, any one that has IE can you check it out. Click aroud let me know if everything works.

Hey Sly - you may have answered this question before, but... how many are we trying to feed?
In looking at the google food sheet to sign up, I'm not sure if we need more of some things (for example, is 1 can of coffee enough? how many pounds of butter do we need total under weekend supplies? how many bowls of salad each night?) or not because I don't know what headcount you're estimating.

I have only attended the SoRuck for two years, but we have had a gathering of women hikers each year. Last year seemed particularly cool with lots of women coming out and telling their story.
I know the schedule is pretty tight and I am looking forward to hearing the talks in the afternoon. I would like to offer my cabin (Cabin E, up on the hill) for a wine/cheese/chocolate/chatting gathering for all women attending the Ruck.

Geeeezzzzzz thanks for reminding me to call and get a place. Just did and it sounded like they had more room/bunks ( not sure if it's snoring or non-snoring  ). 888-905-7238 worked for me.

I just called NOC yesterday. They said they had lots of space left.

Usually at least a dozen (since I keep cabin C). Hopefully a few more this year as we're trying to put together a trail work trip with the Nantahala Hiking Club for Monday.

Sly,
Was wondering if there are more people like me that would do better if I/we knew what was most useful to bring. Would hate to bring more potatoes/ grits ( whatever) only to discover that there was something else needed.

All I can say is look over the spreadsheet. It covers the basics.
I wanted to come to the Ruck but I can't. Besides not working due to weather, I am ill again and this time there is some damage. I can't talk right, I can type okay but I am having problems communicating.
Anyway..........
