HI,

My wife and I sleep are nearing the no turning back phase of an AT thru-hike... can we get by with a 25 degree rated 800 fill down bag with a nice air mattress rated at an r-value of 5.7 ? This would be for the first leg of the hike, start time mid april...and the last leg of the hike, switching back to this arrangement at the start of the white mountains. THANKS FOR THE WISDOM!

yes, you'll be fine starting with those bags in mid-april

Sounds good to me. With a mid-April start you've left the most bitter cold behind.

Certainly. A quality 25-degree bag will work fine. Just remember if it gets a bit cold on some nights night, you have extra clothes and a rainsuit you can wear to bolster your warmth.
