Fontana Parking

I'll be hiking the section between Fontana Dam and Erwin this spring. Is parking available at the dam visitor center or will I have to park in the town? If in the town, approximately how far away is the trailhead?

We parked our cars at the little "police station" up about a 1/2 mile from the trailhead. Seemed like a good place. The car was fine for the 7 days. That was in 1997 or so...

There's plenty of parking right at the dam and they patrol the area 24/7. If you are still worried, park at the Hike Inn and get them to run you down to the dam. While you are there see if you can get the dam tour, don't forget the dam gift shop and also you can't miss the dam showers!
