A few years back there was a guy selling it on ebay, by the foot...

I have a couple buddies in the construction biz, so I guess I could just get some from them but I was just wondering if anyone knew of any shops like Lowe's or Home Depot type places that had small quantities of it...i'll have to look around.

Find an area where homes are under construction, ask your s/o or other female friend to drive over there, talk nice to the construction guys and ask for their leftovers. I suggest the female cuz it works better! A 6-pack of cheap beer helps too!

Lowes, HD have huge rolls of it, but not by the foot. I think Mountain Crossings was selling it by the linear foot to hikers...?

Search here for 5' tyvek. Bought some last spring, from a member from MA.

He might be hiking, or home.

I have a couple of small rolls left. What dimensions are you needing?

I don't have the dimensions right now, probably get them tonight when I get home.

I'd check also at housing construction sites - they are always throwing away pieces of it in dumpsters. You can ask them if they have a piece and get it for free.

If you can't find a piece at a construction site, the best way to get a piece, or find someone with an extra piece, here is an auction on ebay that sells it by the foot:

I picked up a piece from a dumpster in my neighborhood this summer. Builders throw away large pieces every time they build a home.

It's cheaper for a builder to throw away the leftovers (<20') than it is to keep for the next job. Most will give a piece to you, but timing is everything. You need to be there when they are wrapping the house or talk to them a few days before and they may hang onto it for you. You may also get the piece that was covering the french door opening.

Cuffs is correct; Mtn. Crossings sells it by the foot (was there today in fact) but I don't know the price ... I know it was very low. Now they suggest 'washing' it in the washing machine first to get the "crinkle sound out" ... fyi

I got mine from here http://www.antigravitygear.com/proddetail.php?prod=TYVEK

Tyvek available by the foot! Make a footprint for your tent, ground cloth for your tarp or sleeping bag. This Dupont product is super tough and light and water proof. Sold from a 9 foot wide roll, buy the number of feet you want at $2 per linear foot. example: Your tent is 5 feet wide, buy 5 items to = 5 by 9 feet for a total of $10. If you want a 3 foot wide strip to put under your sleeping bag in a shelter, buy 3 units for a 3 by 9 foot piece at $6. Cuts easily to size with scissors.

Some people buy really big pieces. These can be hard to manage well by yourself so let us know if you want us to cut it into smaller pieces for you. Of course there is no extra charge for this.

9x7? If you are truck camping, go buy a 8x10 blue tarp. Fold in under any extra. A 8'=@7' finished, $3.19 here. Wicked bahhghin.

If you are packing 9x7, Home Depot painter's drop. @$2-3.

Got an old tent not worth keeping? Cut the bottom floor off. works better than Tyvek - keep a few scraps for patches too.

Good idea, but I found I couldn't do that when my trusty old REI dome that had protected me for years aged to the point of uselessness. Instead, it got a Viking funeral: Lots of tinder in strategic locations inside, a timed fuse (bummed cigarette tucked behind a book of matches), Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries" on the boom box...not a dry eye around.
