I'm heading out to MD for a long weekend in October and a few friends and I are planning to spend a few nights in Green Ridge State Park for some Hiking and Fishing. Anybody have any insight on finding a secluded campsite? Any general likes or dislikes about the Park?

Thanks in Advance!!!

I was there for Memorial Day weekend. It's a nice park, nothing outstanding, but very pleasant. We car camped there, and the sites are spacious and well separated. Some of them can be a little tricky to drive to; you should be comfortable with driving on dirt roads.

We saw a lot of people with poles, so it must be pretty good fishing.

Be sure to reserve your campspot early. We waited until the week before, and ended up getting the last spot! Of course, that was a holiday weekend.

There's only one trail in the park. It's at least a day's worth of hiking, easy to follow, and not too strenuous.

Have fun!

Green Ridge State Forest is an interesting place, full of shale barrens, tilted rocks, steep little hills, several streams, and many hints of previous occupants from lumbermen through orchardists and moonshiners. It is now on the Great Eastern Trail http://www.greateasterntrail.net/

Buying the map from http://www.dnr.state.md.us/publiclands/greenridgeguide.asp (they call a map a "guide" which is a bit confusing) is recommended to have an idea about the several interlocking trails for various uses, and the many twisty gravel roads.

Some trail segments can get pretty treacherous but most aren't too bad. Several hikes in this tract are well described on http://www.midatlantichikes.com/md.htm

A visit to "Bill's Place" in the tiny town of Little Orleans, Md. on the southeast corner is of interest to many. The Paw Paw Tunnel on the south side of this tract is another point of particular interest.

Just across the PA/MD border is Martin Hill Wild Area where the hills rise higher than the "mountains." Sample hike here: http://www.thealleghenies.com/hiking_detail.aspx?t=153

Another fine dining experience close to Green Ridge Forest HQ is Snider's Road Kill Cafe http://www.palestars.com/roadkill/index.htm

Rocky Gap State Park is nearby, this features a genuine resort as well http://www.dnr.state.md.us/publiclands/western/rockygap.html

I think the campsites are numbered 1-100. Any ideas on one site being better than another? My main concern is feeling like I'm in an RV park with other tents close by. We're used to being back in the woods away from it all, but decided we'd try something different this time.

Thanks for the great feedback.

That map has the numbered campsites on it too. They seem to be fairly far apart from each other from what I've seen of them.
