Does anyone happen to have a pix of this particular sign in CT? It is along the riverwalk in CT, if that helps.

Bearbait: I done the walk in September 2003 and did not see the sign mentioned. How long age was this sign suppose to have been there?.

I know Wingfoot says not to drink the water. I wondered why, maybe this is the reason. Mercury you say?
I believe CT has hiker kiosks at all road crossings and trailheads as well. As to the sign however, I hiked Connecticut nobo twice this summer and saw no such signs while I was doing either riverwalk sections.

I went from Bull's bridge to Ten Mile shelter 2 weeks ago and the only sign was a fishing sign "Catch and release only"

There is the spring on the ridge just north of Lehigh Gap in PA that has an EPA heavy metals warning. The sign for the spring is quite rusty and easy to miss. The water is nice and cold.

being a fisherman and lived in ct from 73-81 and 94-2003 i can tell you there are warnings about eating fish from this river because of mercury so i would not drink it. i dont think filters get toxins out of water.
