In many cases I've noticed that the Woman's forum contained questions which could be addressed by either sex with equal effectiveness.
I feel uncomfortable reading the Woman's forum threads, like I'm not welcome there, when, in reality, I think that some women assume that only other women can understand the way they think and feel.
I would like to help, and even comfort, all hikers in need, but feel, in some cases that the Woman's forum can be a medium which further divides men and women and fosters a feeling of alienation, or at least helplessness, among some of us men who are of the gentler (but no less manly :o) persuasion.

To both of the above posters. How is it (in what sense is it ) that I am alone?
I made a number of statements in the post.
Does it not bother other male members here to peruse the Woman's forum? Should it?
I would like to think that we (as a society) have progressed to the point that we don't NEED gender-specific (either way) forums. Having been married for over 2-1/2 decades, I think I've heard a whole lot about women (mostly from my wife). If I had to rely on conversations in the workplace, most of my knowledge would have been from the man's point of view (or what I've read in books). I've been kept in the dark long ENOUGH!!!!!!!! ;).
Please be gentle with me. (Giggles).

Men should have some respect and stay out of the women's forum.

I agree in principal, however:

1) If we aren't all that different, why do they need a private gossip room (if that's what it is)?

2) Why don't men get (or seem to feel the need for) their own private forum?

Are we afraid that the girls will sneak a peek to see how we really are?
Are the girls afraid of the same?

Coming from one who is tired of hearing "It's just not fair"...................

Who determines what's fair?

Are fair and equal the same thing?

Can we be equal yet different?

Are we embarassed about our differences?

Let them have their space. There's a fundamental difference between the sexes; can't draw comparisons with race/ethnicity... I like that difference, you might even say I'm obsessed with the opposite sex, but some discussions I don't even want to be around - not just the biological stuff - just the way they approach things is completely foreign to me.

I could often make recommendations on women's footwear. I've been bootfitting women for over 7 years. But if they post it to the women's forum, I leave it alone. It's just that simple. If they want a male response, I figure they'll post it to General Gear Talk.

...
The way men are, I'd bet most women think that we act like this whole site is a men's forum, thus they feel the need to set up their own forum to get away from us.

tinker, i'll try to be easy on you:
do you have a period? do you use tampons or pads?
do you have breasts that give milk?
do you have to squat to pee?
do your hormones make your ankles swell and your back ache?

no? well, women want a place to talk about that without smartass input from a bunch of fellas that have no clue what they're talking about. i don't care if they're married or not. until you have a vagina, you really can't know what it can sometimes be like for a woman on the trail.
also, some women are embarrassed about men reading that sort of stuff about them.

so, while some female issues can really be enhanced by a male point of view, there is much that a woman doesn't really need your help on. in fact, the women's forum should probably be viewable only by women for it to have it's intended effect since men obviously can't help themselves from getting on there even when they're not supposed to.

on the other hand, i sincerely doubt if any of the women on this site would give a good gosh darn if you guys decided to have an only-men forum where you talk about ball sweat/chafing, crotch itch, and penis fungus.

and just so you are fully aware, LIFE is not fair.

What would men talk about in a "Men's Only" forum - Jock itch??? Sports??? Bodily functions and the manipulation thereof???
Hey, that's what we talk about ALL THE TIME!

Now, if a woman has a knee, ankle, foot, etc. problem, why does it show up in the Woman's forum where we (even if we are orthopedic sports specialists) aren't supposed to go if we are men? (I probably should have stated it in this way in the first place. That's really my thought).

because "they" (the women) chose to put it there because they want "women's" advice. if they wanted advice from you, the "men", they'd put it in a general forum. i'm sorry, isn't this common sense? go back and read bearpaws post - maybe a man saying it will make it make sense.

There is no need to answer this thread. The concept is simple. They are threads for and by females. If you need to know what's in them the women will tell you. There is no need for you to go there. Don't peek in their pocket book or their thread. If they want something from their purse...you bring the whole purse. If they want your opinion they'll ask in a thread you can read. Starting from “Today’s Posts” some thread titles aren’t obvious; so I’ve blundered into the female forum, too. The last column shows which forum, if I remember to check on that; I wish the titles could be flagged somehow, or the “Forum” column displayed closer to the titles.

OK. Time to confess........

The reason that I posted the orig. set of questions is that I read a post title from a woman who said that she was "so depressed". When I moved my cursor under the post title I began to read about her disappointment because of not being able to hike with her dad, whose knee had been injured. Being the compassionate person that I am, I was touched by what I read. When I clicked under the post title, I was disappointed to see that it was in the Women's forum, meaning that I shouldn't read it. I did anyway, but didn't know whether to respond or not. A man eventually did, giving a brilliant answer to her dilemma. I typed in that I wondered what a woman would say, and the response from a woman was that women don't post these kinds of things in the open forum because (paraphrasing) that they didn't want any snide remarks like mine. I didn't mean to be snide or rude, but I was trying to make the point that men might have valid and valuable insight to the emotional stresses that face women.
That's the story.

I think guys have a lot to offer in certain threads, and other threads they don't because they are---uh, guys! Plus there are guys I'm sure who genuinely want to find out about things from a women's perspective for their wives, girlfriends, and daughters who want to hike. If I want advise from anyone I go to other forums. If I want advice from a woman's point of view I go to the women's forum. Pretty simple. We do have issues different than men that men will never understand. Men have issues we can't understand. That is the point for a woman's forum.

Gee. I'm sure sorry I read this. Sorry you don't know me. I grew up with three sisters, a drunk for a dad, and a wonderful, caring mom.
I've been fully aware that life isn't fair. I sure wish it was, though.
As far as personal hygeine, no, I don't care to discuss that with women (unless they come to me). My wife is a breast cancer survivor, so I know a little about that. My testosterone used to make me fly off the handle at the drop of a hat. I'm glad that's diminished. One of my old friends just died of prostate cancer. I went to his memorial service today.
I will try to help anyone with questions that they may have about hiking, though, whether they are young or old, male or female, rich or poor. I've been around the block a few times and have seen and experienced much. I feel it is my obligation to share what I know with others, not to puff myself up, but so they don't have to go through the stuff I went through, and so that they might not take some of the turns in life I have, so they might be better off.
We ARE all different. We should make the MOST of our similarities and the LEAST of our differences.

I read that post. Nothing snide about your remark. I was also taken aback by the response you got. I just took it as silly foot stomping and pouting. A totally unjustified display of "power". I just decided to completely avoid the Women's Forum in the future. Totally silly.

Tinker, it can't be all about how you feel and how you can contribute to a discussion. The fact of the matter is, a lot of women are simply not comfortable talking about many backpacking-related topics with men, especially women who are new to it. Grooming, safety, how to deal with one's family back home -- these are things that are unique when it comes to women, and that men simply cannot identify with. Even if YOU are especially sensitive, that doesn't mean other men are, or that women should automatically be comfortable talking to you just because you say you are sensitive to women's issues.

And it has nothing to do with political correctness.

That said, I do think a lot of questions are asked in the women's forum that could or should be asked in the general forums. I personally try to post mostly in the general forums.

A lot of men also post there by accident, since those posts show up on the same list of "new posts" as other forums. Maybe there's a way to do that differently.

Pokey, I think (or at least hope) that the moderators are looking into some safeguard to prevent men from looking into those most personal matters women share among each other, not the least of which being where they will be on the trail at a given time. Some things SOME men just SHOULDN'T know. You're right. Some folks aren't who they say they are, and the internet is a very secure place for them to hide and do their evil deeds.

It's not just that. Many women are simply more comfortable chatting and sharing and asking questions with OTHER WOMEN. Many women are uncomfortable opening up with men. And there are issues that are unique to women, such as periods and whatnot.

I liked Marta's idea from the other thread to simply request that a thread be moved if you think it belongs more in the general forum.

And yes, your comment over there was inappropriate.

I wouldn't be able to care less if men wanted to start a men's only forum. I'm able to refrain myself from posting in "class of 2008 only" forums, for the most part. My comment was poorly worded. I didn't think about how it would be taken. Tongue-in-cheek doesn't work very well for me.

Starting from “Today’s Posts” some thread titles aren’t obvious; so I’ve blundered into the female forum, too. The last column shows which forum, if I remember to check on that; I wish the titles could be flagged somehow, or the “Forum” column displayed closer to the titles. There's already a complete change of forum display when you click on a thread.

I wish the recent threads box for each women's forum post was color coded so I wouldn't waste time opening it. If women want either a man's or a gender neutral perspective, post where everyone can answer. They tend to do that. However most members generally aren't perfect when they select a forum to post in. Occasionally the women do ask questions in there that appear to be general in nature. But then again, sometimes general questions are asked in the wrong specific forum. Moderators from time to time do move threads to the appropriate locations.

Seeing it was my reply in the "So Depressed" thread that triggered this almost totally useless thread, I do have a comment to make.

The post I made in that thread where the OP was very upset at not being able to go on a scheduled hike with her dad because he had an leg injury said: "Excuse me for replying in this thread but I'd suggest the 2 of you still go but change the focus of the trip. You could still go on a trip and basically car-camp and visit areas along the trail that interests the two of you that you might not get to see if you were just hiking. If the goal is to spend quality time with your dad, this might be a good compromise, given the circumstances. Good luck."

My post violated no TOS, was respectful, and no one was offended by it. I believe the above is the only post I've ever made in any of the Female Hiking Forum threads, and like others here, I clicked on the title before I saw where it was posted. I have to agree, after reading some of the absolutely idiotic posts in this thread, there is a good reason to keep some men out of the Female Hiking Forum.

This is EXACTLY what I'm talking about. If we don't hear the question, we CAN'T help.

Generally I stay away from the women's forum for many of the reasons stated on this thread. However on rare occasions I do find an item on the women's forum for which I may have a relevant observation. In such cases I just drop a private message to the individual which allows me to be helpful without disrupting forum's intended purpose. I have found that such an approach is graciously received and accomplishes the intended purpose of being helpful to another hiker.

Just give the ladies that are asking their segregated/protected forum so they can discuss all those issues that give us puritanical Americans the heebie-jeebies. It's embarrassing that the sexes still can't get over their differences and discuss them together in a rational manner. I always peruse the women's only forum, not sure if I have posted or not, and have found nothing, not thing one, that would require segregation from men.

I understand it can be a matter of comfortability in discussing certain issues with women-only, but as a matter of right? Hardly. But give the segregated, protected forum to those offended, anyway. That way, I don't have to be embarrassed by the sorry puritanical state of gender-relations in this country.

This comes down to one thing: Some people just like to complain. And gender-based complaints are some of the hardest to refute, political correctness and all. And usually you can get a bunch of men eager to show how sensitive they are to aid in the charge. It's just ridiculous. Women get periods. Wear underwear and sometimes skirts. Some take birth control. Others like men. Some have problems with their hiking partners. Some like cheeseburgers. Others beer. And so on....

Asking a man not to post when he has something constructive to offer is counter-productive and silly. Just segregate and be done with it.

Some women aren't comfortable talking about things with men. For example, what do men know about yeast infections, how birth control affects their hike, or how well a diva cup works?

Any general questions a woman asks about hiking can go in the general forums.

Totally agree. My disconernation comes from the fact that somehow having men be able to view these conversations is somehow objectionable. Is there a man out there who doesn't know that women get yeast infections, take birth control or handle their cycles differently? I don't think so. It's the notion that segregating these conversations will somehow allow freer flow of information from woman to woman. How else will men become more sensitive to these issues if we blocked from learning about them. The diva cup sounds like it would rock if I were a female long-distance hiker. It seems a great practical solution to practical issue that arises for female hikers. I have learned tons by reading these forums. Maybe they should be read-only for men, but again, the idea that woman are so delicate that they can't discuss the issues that arise for them makes me embarrassed for the state of gender-relations in this country. In my opinion, until women feel free to discuss what is important to them freely and openly, as equal members of society, and not behind closed doors, we as a people have a long way to go in recognizing their value. The women-only forum seems to be going back to the days of the menstrual huts. But hey, if that is what they want, I say do it. It just seems a step backwards.

Not surprising that men would react more to being prohibited from a forum based on the stereotype that we are insensitive and/or ignorant. Some of us take offense to that.

Why not prohibit access to women-only forums to those who actually make insensitive or ignorant comments in those forums and leave them open for the rest of us who find "the other" interesting and who may have a constructive comment or suggestion to make every once in a while. I trust the mods at Whiteblaze to make a rational decision on the respectfulness of posts by me and my fellow man in women's-only forums.

tinker, i'll try to be easy on you:This is a basic difference between men and women. You go easy on Tinker and answer with kindness and consideration. A man might answer differently and launch into a sarcastic biting response.

tinker, i'll try to be easy on you:
do you have a period? do you use tampons or pads?
do you have breasts that give milk?
do you have to squat to pee?
do your hormones make your ankles swell and your back ache?

no? well, women want a place to talk about that without smartass input from a bunch of fellas that have no clue what they're talking about. i don't care if they're married or not. until you have a vagina, you really can't know what it can sometimes be like for a woman on the trail.
also, some women are embarrassed about men reading that sort of stuff about them.

so, while some female issues can really be enhanced by a male point of view, there is much that a woman doesn't really need your help on. in fact, the women's forum should probably be viewable only by women for it to have it's intended effect since men obviously can't help themselves from getting on there even when they're not supposed to.

on the other hand, i sincerely doubt if any of the women on this site would give a good gosh darn if you guys decided to have an only-men forum where you talk about ball sweat/chafing, crotch itch, and penis fungus.

and just so you are fully aware, LIFE is not fair.

Women do get embarassed about things. Many of us were raised in the US and there is a taboo about talking about certain female topics. Most women don't want to talk about or discuss how to handle some issues if they know a guy is going to respond. It took me 3 different sites to find out what to do if I got my period on a long distance hike and if cotton only tampons were recycleable in a mulching privy......and I got snide remarks from some guys at one site and still won't ever post there again.

I appreciate the womens only forum for 2 main reasons.....

First, I can post something I wouldn't discuss with my husband (Bearpaw) or another guy as he probably wouldn't have an answer.

Second...I don't have to worry about some smartass making an offhand comment about something he knows nothing about and then continuing to insult me in thread. It doesn't matter that the thread is moderated. The comment was there, it was read and it still hits home.

I don't mind guys posting on the womens forum if they have something important to add...like fitting a boot. I do mind a guy adding his two sense to something he knows nothing about.
