I own a Golite Gust and a Camelbak unbottle 100oz. I have never modded any of my gear (aside from cutting off tags and such) and I was wondering if this would work. I was thinking of taking out the pad in the pack, sewing up the opening on the inside, and opening a new entrance in the back. This would allow the bladder to be removed without digging through the pack, and the padding would act as the back pad instead of the thin sheet that came with it.
Problems I seem to have run in to:
1) I am not sure where I should open the back, since the straps attach real close to the same area.
2) Since I am inexperienced in sewing, how would I go about not ruining the pack when cutting into it/sewing it back up?
3) Will this idea even work?
I have never had a problem with my Gust, and I don't want to ruin it. I do however want it to be more useful than originally intended.
