Does anybody know if there is a website or pdf of shelter register entries? If not than can someone point me in the right direction. I'm want to read some entries for a paper I'm writing. Thanks for your help.

What kind of paper would that be? :-?

Try searching the photo galleries here (from toolbar above: search/search gallery). I found a few register entries by searching on, register entry.

Trail Journals (http://trailjournals.com)can give you another look into the culture too - from hiker's online journals.

Same here for Trailjournals. Its better than shelter registers and records daily accounts instead of blurbs. Most of the trail clubs archive them or send them to the ATC.

Try hiking into the closest shelter from a roadside or near a trail town...check them out IN-PERSON!:D

Also what you can do is contact some of the people that maintain certain sections of trail and shelters. They may have some old copies, or like was said earlier, go to a shelter, there are some within a few miles of road crossing. Another thing is visit some of the parks, restaurants, outfitters and places listed. I know these arent Shelter registers but they do have resgisters in alot of places other than shelters. Good luck on your research.

I saw last summer where you had signed the Hogback Ridge Shelter Register.

Thanks for all the replies. I have had some luck searching for images of the registers. And of course I'm already reading the journals from trail journals. They are a great source.

Call the ATC in Harper's Ferry as they maintain a repository of journals. They may very well have scanned some of them for research purposes......

I have a shelter register (I left a notebook in a register in NC and asked that it be mailed to me when full, and it was) and I'll be glad to send it to you if you'll send me all your contact info (address, phone numbers, etc) and promise to send it back when done.
