Sam my little black terrier mix went off food a few days ago, I was hoping it was nothing major. she went to the vet at noon today and they did blood work and an x-ray, took her temp and all the fun stuff. they thought it was pyometra but found nothing conclusive so the vet suggested doing exploratory surgery. they had her under from about 4:30 til 6:45, I guess she had eatten a peice of carpet and it had started growing into her small intestines, the vet said he'd never seen anything like it. he said she may not live due to the fact that there was some leakage, and she's now missing a foot of her small intestines. I assume she was waking up from the anesthesia okay, I was on the phone with him while she was recovering and he didn't say there were any complications with her waking up, so we should know tomorrow if she's strong enough to make it.

Vegas, our goat Yellow Lab cross, had the identical problem 2 years ago. That time he ate a sock, lost almost a foot of intestine. PLUS the sock had see-sawed coming out of the stomach, eroding the intestine, and stomach contents had leaked into his abdominal cavity. We did not know if he would make it. He did.

A year later, he ate a tennis wristlet. One barium swallow later, he passed it.

Two weeks ago he gets "winky" (when he is ailing he blinks his left eye a lot) again. To make a long two weeks shorter, I finally found shredded plastic grocery store bag he had thrown up.

Keep the faith and the vigil. I am praying for your trail buddy. Welcome to the canine billy goat owner's club.

Well she didn't make it, she passed away sometime between 2am and 8am this morning. they figure she went septic. and they took so much intestine she wouldn't have been able to absorb much anyway, they tried feeding her but it didn't help at all.

Awh, that is so sad. I hate hearing this kind of an end to the story. I am glad she had an owner that loved her so much and took such good care for her.
Some dogs dont have a good life. Thanks for taking care of her!

Thanks everyone.
There are more pictures of her in my WB gallery from our last hike during the summer. She was a good little hiking hound, a little crazy, but good.
