Does the AT go through Gifford Woods State Park in Vermont? If so how would you rate it as far as scenery, shelters, water, bugs, other factors?

The AT does pass thru this little State Park. It's a wonderful place. I've stayed there many times.

I stopped there for a shower in 2001. Cold shower for free, hot shower for 25 cents (50 cents if
you like a longer shower). Don't remember the camping rates, but there were some lean-tos available (we didn't spend the night).

Car camped there last fall. Sites were close together and nondescript, but at least there was a decent bar within walking distance ;-).

Earl Shaffer described it as being one of the finest and best kept parks in the U.S., during his 1948 thruhike. Wonder if he'd still give it a nod like that today.

Hey L.W.

how many Harleys do you own? What model did you just purchase?
I had an old ShovelHead...but traded it (like an idiot) for a drumset....then,
i owned a 1976 Harley...sold it for what i paid for it....now i own a 1994 Honda Shadow VT-1100C (Harley soft-tail look-a-like).

Lookin' to buy another Harley when i retire....probably a RoadKing. :D

As I recall, the shelters at Gifford Woods are very expensive. I also breezed right through when I hiked there last fall -- it's mostly a roadwalk through the park. I remember saying that the shelters should be catered at that price. (I just checked my journal and the sign said they charged $21 for staying in a lean-to. Maybe that is for having the whole thing to yourself??)

Yup - its $21 for as many people as you can cram in there. They are quite bit shelters, and getting 8 people into one would not be a problem. I really like this place for car camping. Its quiet, the sites are somewhat secluded and there are no RV hookups.

Will we see you in cigarette ads crossing a stream with your Harley parked on the bank?
