Does anyone know if the firetower is still open on Mt. Sterling. :)
According to Peter Barr's 2008 book, Hiking North Carolina's Lookout Towers, the cabin is dilapidated. Repairs are hoped for (budgeting?) by the Park and the Forest Fire Lookout Association.
I understand you can still climb the stairs for awesome views.

i was there over labor day weekend last year and the firetower was open. it's a great hike, too.

I was there over Memorial Day weekend of this year and it was open. Great views!

It's open. Just watch your step, as a lot of the floor has rotted out. Great views, though!
