I currently use a pair of goretex lined wool mittens with half fingers under the mitten part. This makes for great warmth combined with manual dexterity by just pulling back the mitten part. My issue is I would like a waterproof cover for my mittens so in heavy rain I can put those on (or use just the shell and polypro liners if temps warrant).

I am having trouble finding just the shells as most try to sell you the shell with liner already built in. I had an OLD pair that I got as a hand me down from my mom but of course when you are 15 mittens are not cool and they went by the wayside (stupid me). Any suggestions or experience would be great. I have even considered making a shell au I suppose it would not be difficult.

Thanks

Mountain Laurel Designs sells eVent mitten shells. Very light, not too expensive.

I have a pair of heavier shells I found at Mt Rogers Outfitters in Damascus, don't recall the brand but it was European. But I want some of the MLD mitts.

I use an extremely basic, but very effective system--I've got a couple of silnylon bags that can go over either my hands or my feet. They're 7" or so wide and more than a foot long. I bought them from Dancing Light Gear a couple of years ago. It would be very easy to make your own.

I have the original OR Rain Mitts ...which they discontinued. But here is another alternative:

I've had excellent luck with army wool liner gloves (http://www.vtarmynavy.com/wool-glove-liners.htm)and the ULA mist overmitts (http://www.ula-equipment.com/mist.htm). I've used them in all kinds of 3 season hiking and found this combo to effective.

The wool gloves I use all year around. I layer them with OR Overmitts (http://www.campmor.com/outdoor/gear/Product___18090) for backcountry skiing.

Good point. Some people don't get along with wool. I do. :) After some extended wear, any itchiness will probably go away unless you REALLY don't get along well with wool.

Cedar Tree (thepacka.com) also makes some silnylon overmitts.

Note that those Overmitts are insulated. These are not:

I use these and like them alot.

I've used an old pair of OR plain overmitts for years for winter hiking. Usually use them with a pair of liner gloves most of the time, with fleece mitts in my pockets in reserve.

I'd like to make a pair of silnylon or eVent ones this winter though.

I have some ULA mist mits that I purchased from MRO, they do well over my ragg wool gloves. They aren't lined and are very light weight, no problems with them so far.

kind of off topic, but sort of related. i found a few pairs mittens made of the popular field jacket liner style at my local army/navy store. i'm probably going to pick a pair up later this week

My 3 season glove combination is a pair of power stretch liner gloves (Outdoor Research), and a pair of MLD eVENT rain mitts. This is not winter-worthy, and won't work for my Dad, who has poor circulation to his fingers; however, it works for me. In the winter, I sometimes will augment this combination with a pair of homemade primaloft overmitts, or I'll use a set of fleece convertibles like you refer to. Anyway, the MLD eVENT rain mitts are great, but I'm not sure how essential it is that they be breathable. You could probably get away with silnylon ones.

hikingPA, that's actually good to know. Sometimes what army surplus stores have really surprises me, so I'll have to go check one out before it gets too cold.
