My god...what a beautiful dog. How in the world did they allow Luna in Baxter? I'd like to see their story.

She told the BSP folks Luna was a service dog. BSP allows service dogs.

Drat, Winter and I had it backwards. I'm Winter's service person. Winter said that I have to be because I have the thumbs. Maybe I've been tricked by another female that's smarter than me.

Why do some of you infer that it wasn't a service dog?

exactly what friggin service did it perform for the owner?

Why do some of you infer that it wasn't a service dog?

A service dog is specially trained to enable a person with disabilities to perform essential functions they could not do without it. A seeing eye dog for instance. Without knowing this person, except that she successfully completed the trail, suspicion is well founded.

Some "medical professionals" hand out service dog paperwork like candy, and officials are afraid to challange it.

All of that said, this woman may have a hidden disability and need the beast.

I hope we find out.

They have nothing better to do. If she has the paperwork to back up the service dog claim, then there is nothing to stop her from taking the animal wherever she goes. It could be a seizure dog or something along those lines.

I think we should take her word on it, as did the BSP folks.

I think the Disabilities Rights Act prohibits the disabled person from having to answer any questions about the service dog. I think a service dog doesn't even need paper work certifying it as a service dog.
I am not an expert on that issue. Winter said I wouldn't have to go to the special "service person" classes so long as I open the door for her when ever she wants me to.

You'll have to take my word she told the BSP folks it was a service dog. Some BSP folks and I were talking about people and dogs (Hammer and Nails, Bill Irwin, Zero/Zero having no dog) a week ago and this hiker and dog came up.

Read more on this story in the upcoming weekend edition of The Eufaula Tribune available Friday (Oct. 24).
Maybe that detail will show up Friday.

A person doesn't have to answer any questions regarding their disability but they can be asked to provide documentation showing the dog has been properly certified as a service dog.

OK, if Luna is a service dog she must have had to show some sort of proof of it to the rangers. If Luna isn't a service dog, dodging the rangers would take a fair amount of luck.

I used to tell people that my big Yellow Lab was a "listening dog". He would tell me what people were saying. As proof I would tell the questioner to say something and that my dog would tell me what they said. They would say something and I would bend down to let my dog translate. Then after a brief pause I would straighten up and tell the doubter what they had just said. Now how can you dispute that?

The article states her father is a doctor. Could be legit service dog, but it would not be hard for her to get papers if the dog was not.

From the picture it seems this "Service Dog" doesn't even require a leash. Regardless of park rules.

You are correct. Service dogs are not bound by leash laws.

What does it matter, there are a ton of uses for service dogs. A person doesnt have to be blind or missing 2 arms and 2 legs. Lots of uses for a service dog that make it easier for people to live and make it around without help from other people.

Just be happy she and her dog had the chance to hike/finish the trail.

My dogs provide a service to me each and every day. They contribute to my health and well-being, and improve my life. Good for the team. I'm proud for them.

I agree, but I would never claim mine to be a Service Dog. I am NOT stating that this is the case in this thread (I have no idea), but I have witnessed "fake" service dogs on restricted trails before.

Wondering, did the guy/girl tell you he/she was full of poo about the dogs being service dogs?

If the dog was a "mental service" (lack of better term), there would be no way of telling.

Without trying to, yes.

Mental service????

You mean all I have to do is say, "I need my dog's company to remain sane" and I get the permit?

Nope, not gonna play that game.
