Rock has retired form the Army and is working in Tennessee.

Not sure what Dix is up to, but I sure hope it includes spending lots of time with Rock and the boys.

FD left the site some months back during an extended dispute over how the site was being moderated.

I hope all these folks are healthy and well and that they check in with us eventually.

Great food, though. Still enough of the Portuguese (Azores) fishing community influence there, at least on the culinary level.

Kale soup rocks! And the Portuguese sweet bread fresh from a bakery on a Sunday. Yummers....

New Bedford, Fall River (Mass), East Providence, Bristol and W. Warwick (RI) also had great Portuguese communities with awesome food...

Anthony Bourdaine got his start in P-Town. Talks about it extensively in his books about the wonderful local portugese community and food. I'm living and breathing Federal Hill right now so I'm going over grape varieties and pairings for my italian dishes before work tonight. "Yes sir we do carry the '97 Silverado Limited Reserve". $520. That will go lovely with a New Zealand Rack of lamb garlic and rosemary encrusted and grilled to your likeing, set atop a bed of vanilla flecked sweet potatos finished in a poached pear-port wine demi glace`. Good night all.

And the last time I was in P-Town I had a wonderful little meal and an outdoor bistro. Good times.

I made something similar the other night. Used a pork roast instead.

Slit the roast, infuse with garlic, rosemary, red pepper, black pepper and salt. Slowly roast at low temp (~250F) for ~1/2 hr per lb. I must say it was yummy.

Paired with twice baked potatoes (goat cheese and bacon) along with green beans sauted with diced tomatoes and fresh dill. Add a salad with walnuts, apples, cranberries and goat cheese. And my "greens and beans" soup as well. Used some left over frozen strawberries and canned peaches to make a quick cobbler for dessert.

Yeah..I like food damn it! Food is ALWAYS hiking related.. .;)

Next time with the twice baked, take some broccoli florets and dice some asparagus spears real thin, scoop out the potatos, add sour cream and some butter, put back in potato skin. Yum.

I miss those guys who don't post as much.

Yeah, he was talking about hiking, not kayaking!! I might talk with an accent and be a little backwards to some of the northerners out there, but I ain't never told anyone they had a pretty mouth.

LMBO ~ Figured eveeryone would get a better picture if I used paddling ~ I guess I could have said "Run faster". Glad to hear you have never told anyone they had a pretty mouth.

Now I need to clean my monitor off since I was taking a drink when I read your post!

LOL,

Possible lows in the teens, possible highs in the 60s. Possible snow, rain, or sleet. It is even possible it could be PERFECT weather. Best to get a good idea two weeks out. I expect a normal winter this year. So if it is normal, normal that is......It should be highs in the 50s with lows in the low 30s. But both ends of the extreme are possible. It was 75 here yesterday, supposed to be 30 tonight.

(Eating my own version of an ethnic staple right now: "greens and beans")

You're making me hungry...

Back in the day, the best place in New Bedford to get Portuguese "small breads" was the Economy Bakery. They held out against the use of machines to knead the bread. In the back room, there was a long counter where a few guys with really gnarly arms kneaded the dough.

The best place in New Bedford to get icecream was Frates Dairy, which was shaped like a milk bottle. They made a dynamite icecream pie.

My folks get a big order of linguica shipped on dry ice from New Bedford every year for Christmas.

You want my recipe for kale soup? It's that time of year when hot soup is good.

BTW, it was spitting corn snow on us all morning in the Grayson Highlands today.

Yup. As I've said for years, the climate of the mountains of georgia are remarkably similar to that on the midcoast of Maine.
