I am planning a thru-hike beginning March 20, 2009. I have an Arc Teryx Bora 80 pack, a Eureka Backcountry (1 man) tent and a Marmot Helium 15 bag.

Are these the right tools to keep me comfortable, especially early in the hike?

I realize that pack weights vary greatly, but what is a target weight that I should expect to carry with everything in the pack?

Just keep it simple. Just like LW always says and holds very true, "Its just walkin"

Fine. But, I bet U will not need all the volume, or the wt., of the Bora 80(80 Liter?) by the end of your journey. U will learn to decrease what U take and make lighter wt. more compressable gear choices which will result in needing a lower volume lighter wt. pack. As your journey progresses U will learn alot from other thru-hikers carrying less and having lower pack wts.

I would say to get a smaller bag but if you already have it then don't go out and get a smaller one. Just make sure not to keep filling it til it is full.

You'll probably be switching packs halfway through. :) I did, went from 7 lb to 2 1/2 lbs big difference, esp when I got up north.

The Helium is excellent! Have a summer bag ready, though. The other stuff sounds heavy to me. Like Colonel Chaco, my weight without food or water was 8 pounds.
