I'm curious as to what long pants thru-hikers wear in cool weather. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I usually just use poly pro bottoms with either shorts or my summer long pants over them when hiking. Think this is pretty standard fare.

I wear regular athletic sweats. Then wear Polar Ice thermals for the cold. Then add other thin layers if needed.

Army surplus parachute pants. Cheap and very high quality!

I do not wear pants (except in Colorado winter) and prefer the shorts/polys combo. I find my legs move easier and it regulate my temperature better.

Dorky looking, but effective. :)

Yup , me too , polypro and shorts till it gets real cold...sub-freezing.
Are you still dorky looking if no one else that sees you?

Ditto. Love the REI Sahara convertables.Yep, summer, spring, winter, fall, the REI Sahara Convertables are the ticket. If it gets real cold, just slip some polypros on under them. I never find the need to hike in polypros though, so if it's cold in the morning I start out with the Saharas in long pants mode and when my legs start getting too warm, I just zip off the bottoms and I'm in shorts. When I get to camp and cool down, just zip the bottoms back on . . . works great!

Does that zip off area bother you much?

+1 on the convertibles. Mine are from EMS, and they come out of the closet more than any other pants I own. In true winter, I wear a softshell pair from LLBean made from Schoeller Dryskin fabric. They aren't made any more, but the REI Mistral pants are similar: stretchy, water and wind resistant, tough yet breathable.

I think so.

You be the judge.... ;) (From a pupkin carving hike last night... Photos to follow.....)

Dorkyness abounds on the Trail. Polypro under my regular shorts, or New Balance windblock running pants in wet weather. Zip-offs seemed like a good idea, but the zipper band thingy around my leg bugs me to distraction.

+1 on the shorts/thermal combo. I usually fry in long pants anyway. Throw some rainpants or windpants on top when it gets really cold and you're good to go.

Seems awfully warm to hike in. Even in winter I do not hike in fleece pants.

Does that zip off area bother you much? Not at all with the REI Saharas. That was my major objection to other convertibles that I had tried on in stores. So when I went to try on REI's, I was skeptical. But soon as I walked a few paces in the store I was like, wow! These are incredible.

I wear running shorts (comando) until it gets below freezing, then put on long underwear bottoms until it gets really cold, when I add rain/wind pants.

Yeah, and they're all showing off holes in their clothing. You can only see the hole in Mags' knee. What you can't see is the cause of the holes--a 20' slide down a steep Class 4 pitch, stopped by a vegetable belay (convenient tree). Awesome day!

i just wear track pants a lot of the time in fall and spring. can unzip the side pretty far for ventilation with less exposure to ticks and poison and such

MHW's matterhorn convertibles. chamois lined waist line, zippered legs are unnoticeable. and kick ass pockets

Unlined spalding zipoff nylon track pants, 3$ at the goodwill. The zippers don't bother me.
