Looks like over kill for Florida unless the temps are getting below 30 degrees. I carry a wool cap that I use to sleep in when camping above 10,000ft. It works nice as a cool weather cap as well.

Another place you might try is (http://www.coloradocyclist.com/product/display/40650/) they have very lightweight headgear for cyclist that are warm and wick moisture away from your head keeping you dry as well.

http://www.coloradocyclist.com/img/product/200/a/assxwwxs.jpghttp://www.coloradocyclist.com/img/product/200/e/extxwrlx.jpghttp://www.coloradocyclist.com/img/product/200/a/assxwy89.jpghttp://www.coloradocyclist.com/img/product/200/c/craxwu3r.jpg

They have several styles to choose from. I have also found that a balaclava works well also. I have lifted it up before so it covers my ears and head and back of my neck and been able to wear my bush hat on top to shade the sun.

You said cool weather, right? For cool weather I wear my life is good runners hat with a buff like a head band around my ears. I've worn this in snow as well.

Overkill for FL? Not really, we do get cold weather on the FL Trail.

However, while this blaze orange balaclava may not be overkill it was a little absurd! In my defense, it was hunting season!

But this setup: A buff around my neck and head, then a fleece earband as an extra layer over ears, then my ever-present tilley over the top (for sun and rain protection) is more the norm.

If it's very cold and wet I can also get the hood of my rain jacket under the Tilley.

The advantage of using multiple layers is the same for as the rest of the body, it's very easy to remove one of the layers as I warm up (but never the Tilley! ;))

I prefer simple head gear, just enough to get the job done
knit cap when it's cold and ball cap when it real sunny

Here is my thought on my "Elmer" cap. A beenie doesnt come down over the ears. Then if it did warm up, I can lift the ears (and look like a TOTAL daff) reminds me of Barney Fiff in the episode when he bought the motorcycle with the side car as a patrol bike. Anyways, it should do just fine.

J....Awh, the infamous tilley and sunglasses.... recognized you right away.

J....Awh, the infamous tilley and sunglasses.... recognized you right away.LOL on the explanation. I wear fleece (my old snow ski one) and I have some that are hats that are long enough to cover ears (but no particular ear flaps); one that does have ear flaps ... and sometimes I only wear fleece ear muffs where the band goes behind the neck and can't be seen if the hair is down (or to the bottom of your ears) ... but I'll take a hat most likely. LOL on the Barney thing though ... I think I saw that episode many years ago, lol.

I unfortunately don't have a picture, but I use a hat with a fleece lining and wool outerpart. Its a little on the heavy side for a hat, but its toasty warm. Granted, I usually do overnights in late May in the White Mountains-so it comes in handy. Other parts of the year, I might end up using a lighter hat, one that's a simple knit beanie or something.

I can't wear wool either. Sometimes merino can bother me as well, but have made out okay with Smartwool products.

It's on top of Mt Lincoln (14,286ft) with Mt Bross (14,172ft) in the background. It's in the Lincoln Group ~ I did three of the four that day ~ Bross, Lincoln & Cameron (14,238ft). Knocked off Mt Democrat (14,148ft) the weekend before. Had to head down because of a storm rolling in when I did Democrat ~ "Getting to the top is optionial, Getting down is mandatory" ~ Steady Ed Viesturs

My favorite hat is this Mt. Hardwear beanie I picked up this past spring for cheap at REI on clearance. I got both the husband one and me one!

Really thin, super soft fleece. It isn't scratchy like how some of them get :) And it weighs like air as well.
I don't like thick or heavy hats - I overheat up there - too much hair :p

Buffs are great for those cold FL days. You can use a biner clipped to your belt loop to secure it when you get too hot, then it's nice and handy when the wind hits you or you stop for a break, cool off etc.

You can wear a Tilley over a buff too! :banana

Try a merino Tibetean Raider hat. Only loosers can't wear wool. lol...kidding, but wool rocks.

The balaclava (full head cover deal like below) was a lifesaver in cold and wind. Had a wool beanie too, during cold weather months, mostly worn in camp, occasionally doubled up. I think mine was pretty cheap, and maybe the only (part?) cotton item I had. Looked like a bank robber, but loved it, plus if you get warmish, you can just pull the lower portion up and make it hat-like.
