I read in "Central Scapes" that the AT underpass is to be dedicated this Saturday, 11/15/08. Can anyone confirm and/or forward a time?

Thank you,
JEB

I can confirm that it's NOT going to be in November. I got an e-mail forwarded to SATC from ATC today, that the ribbon cutting is tentatively scheduled for December 13 at 11:00. The e-mail also said there will be an ATC web page for this event but did not give a URL. When I have more definite information it will be posted to the CVATC web site.

I thought trolls just lived under bridges and surf WB. I saw the article in the AT mag. I like the faux stone work on the concrete. They should put bunks in it. It would make a great shelter.

Updated and final info. on the hikes to the dedication.

The dedication itself will be at 2 p.m. at the Rt. 944 Underpass location. There is NO PARKING there.

There are two choices for hikes to the dedication:
Option 1:
Jim Foster will lead a hike from the Scott Farm AT Work Center to the new 944 Underpass. This will be a two mile trek over mostly flat terrain at a moderate pace, with an optional two mile return hike after the ceremony. Due to limited parking, MEET ONLY at 12:00 noon in the parking lot of the Camp Hill Shopping Center between Boscov's and Sovereign Bank - then carpool to Scott Farm. Contact Jim at 717-649-5505 or [email protected].

Option 2:
Frank Bohn will lead a hike from Sherwood Drive to PA-944 and back totalling 1.8 miles. This will be a round-trip (no shuttle after the ceremony). Due to limited parking, MEET ONLY at 12:45 p.m. in New Kingstown, PA at the intersection of Locust Point Road and Main Street (Route 11 eastbound), next to the United Methodist Church - then carpool to Sherwood Drive. Contact Frank at 717-234-5169.

Note: SATC and CVATC hikers attending the dedication are strongly urged to use one of the two hike options rather than driving directly to Scott Farm or Sherwood, due to very limited parking there. There is NO PARKING at the 944 underpass site. Please WEAR BLAZE ORANGE FOR BOTH HIKES due to deer hunting season (although we will not be hiking through heavily hunted areas).

they probably wont put any bunks in the tunnel. but might make for a good break from the rain. safe like being in a cave during lighting storms right? :eek:and why do they need a dedication for? do they dedicate new privies?

One benefit of the "dedication" would seem to be the publicity it has generated. I know my editors were interested in an update (did a small brief with a photo the other day).

Given the challenges the trail faces here in the Cumberland Valley from development, it is important to keep the AT in people's consciousness. When local municipalities start looking at zoning laws under the new state law (actually an amendment to an old law), public support could be crucial to those efforts.

Restrictive zoning is never popular with the folks who believe they should have an absolute right to do anything they want with property they own. And there are plenty of those folks in the area.

If dedicating this underpass, silly as it might seem on face, helps with awareness efforts, it is a good idea.

Without knowing the agenda for the ceremony, I'm just guessing here, but it could also be a chance to publicly thank some of the officials who helped get the funding for the project. Always helps to give those folks a little pat on the back. Important to keep them on your side for future efforts. Especially in a state like Pa., where legislators get to hand out "walking around money" grants.
