Would appreciate any info as to what road to take to Grayson Highlands to get on the AT and head S to Damascus. Would like to do 30-40 miles. I see the Wise Shelter in the Data Book but no road there about 33 miles from Damascus. Thanks, Jay B.

Hey Jay B.!! When are you planning to hit the trail? I will be going in through Massie Gap this Fri {11/14} with my amigo T-Bob at lunch time.

Just got back from Damascus Saturday. Probably won't be able to get back til spring because of little vacation time left. Thanks for the invite to meet on the trail but it can't happen now. Hope your hike is great! I hear thats a nice section. Check the water because we have had very little in that area.

Be aware, and it may not affect hikers, but Grayson Highlands will be closed to the general public 11/15, 11/17, and 11/18/08 for "managed hunting", according to their website. This was a surprise to me. I went to the site to check weather forecasts...

Tons of Deer in SNP. A hunter could hang out on one section of the AT in SNP for one day and most likely catch ten deer.

Kirby dear, you "catch" fish, but "shoot" or "hunt" deer... unless maybe one is a photographer...

the wild bear in all the parks could use a little of this help too - it would serve to make them more reclusive.

According to Laurie P. yesterday at the ATC, that banner is misleading. Only a portion of the Park is closed and that is away from the AT.

Maybe they'll fix the banner, but I'd call the Park for details if concerned.

Hey Kirby and Red Hat,

I hiked SOBO thru SNP in October... and there was one deer I think I could have caught! A young buck walked right up to my yellow lab on the trail (the deer all love her, she must look like a fawn or something) I don't know that I could have caught ten, but I think I could have tagged that one!

Blissful said she had to wave her poles to get one to move off the trail.

... and it looked like a stampede going thru Big Meadow!
