Since getting my foot operated on a couple of weeks ago ( foot up, don't walk, keep it iced etc) I've got a lot of time to read. Was wondering if there are other sites (backpacking, hiking, kayaking) that anyone would recommend?

Thanks

IMO, there isn't a better hiking site, so why bother. You could read journals, or a book.

Seriously, read some journals on trailjournals.com - some of them are entertaining. If I was really bored - that's what I'd do. Luckily, I'm not.

There are lots of sites. This seems to be the most busy and has lots of information. There is also hammock forums, trailplace.com and hikinghq.net to name a few.

I agree! I learned more here than from all the books I bought (and the SORUC - thanks for that; and Jacks article, and the list goes on). Just thought there might something I was missing.

no, i really enjoyed the book, more so than any other at book i've read. most people not hung up on criticizing bryson's criticism of the at town folk enjoy it too. i've always posted such on WB. the only part i didn't care for was some of the historical stuff. i just skip over those parts now.

BTW: i actually had to look up :d = :D

read a walk in the woods. best book on the at in print.

Read it. And while I found it amusing on one level ( and was amazed by the number of people who have read it and tell me about it when ever I mention the AT) the review by J Greber from Amazon would probably come closer to my over all thoughts on the book. There is even a study guide out for the book now. And where does the part about (official guides to the AT )come from?

Not much of a writer( or typer). Thought about the profile ( and I do look at others) I guess is now a good time to work on that. Usual style of writing is:

write, think, edit, write, edit, think, delete

I'm almost done reading this book:
http://www.amazon.com/Faithful-History-Catholics-America/dp/067402818X/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1226706390&sr=8-1

Good read if you are curious about the cultural impact Catholicism had had on the culture as a whole, its evolution in America and how it still shapes many people who are no longer Catholic, but have been affected by it...

Good to read something other than outdoor stuff once in a while. :)

the review by J Greber from Amazon would probably come closer to my over all thoughts on the book.

Jane was the president of SATC at the time and she wrote similarly (perhaps edited a bit more :) ) in the Appalachian Trailway News. I'm sure she would be happy to note that people still agree with her after all this time. :)

Ofthearth: Great paddling site is www.myccr.com (Canadian Canoe Routes). It will get you to dreaming and the doing is even better. Threads are set up by province and there is a lot of good info on routes, gear, and all the other stuff you need to plan a trip. There are a few people that post there that are on whiteblaze, too.

Hope your foot heals quickly.

I agree that the journals on trailjournals will keep you occupied for a long while. If you want outdoor forums, you can check out backpacker.com. Their forum is pretty active, though not as much as whiteblaze. Another one is www.thebackpacker.com/trailtalk which is usually less active, but it has an occasional interesting thread and they do hikes all over the country if you want people to hike with.

Trail Journals are great especially when you have met the hikers out on the Trail or at a Feed, whatever. On the other hand my nephew met this drop dead georgeous, sweet, wonderful, woman on a "Colombian Women" site and they have been happily married five years now.

I like the backpackinglight (http://www.backpackinglight.com/cgi-bin/backpackinglight/index.html)website, the forums are free however the articles require a subscription. Really though I don't mind if you find the information of use, helping out with operating cost is not to much to ask. Same goes for Whiteblaze, a little donation is fair this website is by far the best I have found. The gear reviews at BPL are good, the only problem there is they are crazy about UL, and SUL to the point that most of there gear lists are very spartan.

Here are some books that perhaps you could check out from the library:

The Thru-Hikers Guide to America by E. Schimmler
This book gives some info about 25 other LD trails in the US ranging from 100 to 1000 miles. Pretty addicting book.

The Cactus Eaters by Dan White
Chronicles a 2 year hike of the PCT in the '90's. It was funny, in an admittedly in a sometimes how not to do things way.

Alone in the Appalachians by Monique Dykstra
Int'l AT hike in 2000, the year the trail officially opened. Lots of color pictures, lots of people, lots of Canadian history, a true blue blaze and hitchhiking adventure. So if those sort of things offend you...

Walking Home by Kelly Winters
Emotional book about an AT hike in 1996.

Coming into the Country or The Pine Barrens by John McPhee
John McPhee, best non-fiction writer ever. The 1st is about Alaska in the 1970's, the 2nd about the New Jersey Pinelands in the 1960's. The feel is not dated, but more historical and social commentary about a certain time and place.

Feel better soon!
