Don't forget to check your local "second hand" or "thift" stores.
I've found packs and clothing useful for backpacking for just a few dollars each.

I've bought most of my used gear right here on WB in the used gear forum. Check it often, and contact the seller soon to get the best deal. The best buys go fast, but sometimes the price goes down if no one jumps. (usually the price was too high to begin with)
