Planning an 11 day trip in Shenandoah but will need it for a hopeful thru hike in a few years. Is the 2002 wingfoot guidebook still relevant?

The actual trail information will still be pretty accurate and relevant. The biggest area of change will be in the businesses and services and who are the current providers. Just be sure, if you absolutely are counting on a particular business, to give them a call ahead of time, so you can make alternate plans if necessary.
You might want to take a look at www.appalachianpages.com (http://www.appalachianpages.com) I have been using this guidebook and a new update is coming out in February.

You can also go to www.aldha.org and examine the On-Line version of the Thru-Hiker's Companion 2008. The Companion is usually considered the most accurate of the major trail guides.

I USED THE 1997 GUIDE BOOK IT IT WAS GREAT YOU SHOULD KEEP THEM GOING. THOUGH I JUST COMPLETED THE JMT. i THINK I WILL HIKE OUT WEST FROM NOW ON.
Certainly one change in services after 2002 is the closing of Panorama in Thorton Gap.

I only secton hike. But the 1989 one has still been mostly accurate.
Even the 2009 one will be outdated in some places. As example: Abby's place hostel was closed in 08, but it was still in all of the guides. It happens.
My 180 mile 08 hike was with the 07 guide, no problems at all, any changes were noted in the shelter journals & trail gossip!
I don't use the 89 one anymore, but I have notes from it in a few places on the new ones I get "Just for fun".
