We have two of the older Pentax waterproof cameras. They work well, and appear to be waterproof, though we never tried them underwater. They provide image quality comparable to any tiny point-and-shoot digital.

Does that help?

I do not own the pentax waterproof camera, but I do own the competitive olympus 1030. The olympus is waterproof, crushproof and has a few other features. I've really enjoyed the waterproof feature on the camera. we went to Mexico this summer and it was perfect for pictures in the ocean. I have yet to take it on the trail, but I know it will hold up well. I think this feature is a good idea when taking pictures in the great outdoors. The camera takes pretty good pictures for having an internal lens. Hope this helps. Here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/daniellcs/) are some pictures I've taken with the camera.

It depends what you are after. For picture quality I would recommend the Canon G9 or better G10, the Sony W300 or Nikon P6000. If you prefer a wider again lens the Panasonic LX3 and the Ricoh GX100/200 offer a 24mm equivalent (you miss out on the tele range) and are still better than most for image quality.
The camera I take to the bush is an Optio WP1 because (like the W60) it is small/light and waterproof. Because of the 28mm lens in both the Pentax W60 and the Olympus SW1030 if I wanted to replace my camera now I would look at one of those two.
Picture quality from these two is similar so decide on the one you like .
