I purchased a Seedhouse 1 for my thru-hike next year.What do people think about seam sealing new tents -- is it really necessary?Buzz

No. All seams are taped at the factory.

Most tents purchased at outfitters like REI are already sealed, including MSR tents, Big Agnes tents, etc. But if you get a Henry shires tarptent it needs to be sealed....

I always do it just because. It doesn't take long or cost much and if you do have a leak it will drive you nuts at 0300 drip drip drip.

The seam tape is in the inside, and when brand new and applied correctly at the factory, your tent should not leak. After being folded a lot and crinkled up, IMO the tape inevitably will not work 100%. I spend the time and money to seam seal the outside of any tent i have, at least the main overhead seam, regardless if it is taped. Then at least the seam thread will not absorb water, possibly leading to a leak if your tape is/has crapped out. Tales maybe 1/2 hour, $8. Good one time insurance for me.
