While taking Blaze the wonder dog for a walk about 4 weeks ago he stopped to drink out of his favorite place. It is a small trout stream. When I bent over and asked him was that good, he jumped up and gave me a mouth full of wet dog face. :p About 6 days later I got the stomach flu. After it didn't go away for 3 weeks I went to the doctor. Test revealed giardia. I need a way to steripen my dog.:D

Be sure to cook the dog thoroughly before partaking in lunchtime. Don't eat stomach or intestinal track. If there's any piece of meat you're unsure about, avoid it.

It actually is. The dog thing is probably just a coincidence. Can't prove or disprove one way or the other, though.

Sounds like your dog's immune system is stronger than yours!

Don't ya love it when they give you big licky kisses at the most inopportune times?

No. Puppies are a beast.

More evidence that you should never kiss a dog! :p

Because a dog licks where they lick, probably a good possibility, the water may have been fine. Blaze seams to be much older but giardia is very common with puppies.

I also caught giardia once and suspect it came after scuba diving where we were down in the silt and settlement of this lake attempting to locate a missing swimmer. Years ago sewage went directly into lakes and "stuff" still lives on. Now we use full face masks to prevent this.

I am making an educated guess. The trout stream has a beaver dam about 1/2 mile up stream. When the dog jumped his face was full of water, kind of like having a wet sponge shoved in your mouth. So it wasn't just a lick, it was a face wash.
I can't think of anything else that might have caused it. Didn't drink out of any springs or rivers during that time. I sure haven't been swimming. Who knows, but the big G ain't much fun.
Giardia doesn't make dogs sick in my experience. I've raised sporting dogs for 30 years.

House dogs may not be so tough. My father-in-law's dog just had an ugly bout of giardia. Lots of carpet to be cleaned...

Wow that is something. My dogs have all lived in the house, but they get hunted hard. They have retrieved ducks out of some of the nastiest beaver ponds you've ever seen. They also drink and wallow in every creek they find. Never had a problem.
I'm glad for my carpets and my hide that it has never happened to me.

But seriously, your probly right when you said you got Giardia from what's on the "outside" of the dogs mouth. Dogs have over 30,000 anti-bacterials and anti-virals in their saliva. I don't know the effectiveness against Giardia but I do know that dogs mouths are much cleaner and safer to lick than most humans.

The same piece of raw chicken that might give you salmonella won't affect your dog.

It may not have been the water. I recall an article that claimed up to 70% of dogs are carriers if giardia.

Tell that to my Lab who wakes me up every morning by jumping on the bed at 0430 and licking me until I get up and take her on a walk. She doesn't have nuts, by the way.
