That's the point of restoration. There aren't any better views in the southern Smokies.

Yup lots of causes. Some worthier than others.

Is it an eyesore that should be removed in order to return the mountain to its natural state? Or, does its rich history and enjoyment by past, present and future hikers beckon its return to mint condition. Time will tell.....

Worthier causes? There is no rating system. We are all motivated to participate or give in different ways for different things. I say we put a big red light on top to guide Santa in!

The views were super up there, I must say, but the tower in the wind was like being on some amusement park ride.

THANX, Rasputen. Instead of bitching and whining about something I'll take action and write a letter!

Maybe the makings of a good thread there. What should ATC be spending money on?

Shuckstack tower was rickety and spooky 18 years ago. I hope they can restore it. I hope the AT always has a few firetowers left standing on it.

If you want information about NC's fire towers, this is your resource:

http://www.amazon.com/Hiking-North-Carolinas-Lookout-Towers/dp/0895873567/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1227646809&sr=1-4

There's some sort of fire tower preservation society that is lobbying to save and fix up fire towers. I'm not at home, so I can't look up the information right now.

Was there a few years ago and it was in pretty bad shape. I am from Ohio and spend a lot of time in the Smokies and I would like to see it restored but does not seem like a AT project more of a park problem. But money is money and I appreciate the info on the sights. I will check on it.
