I'm interested in getting a pair of cocoon (down) pants, but can't figure out where to buy them. It looks like Backpacking Light used to carry them, but does no longer.

Where can a find them? Are they being made any more? If not, can you recommend something similar?

Cheers.

BP Lite has these, but not down. Try contacting BPL to see if they can tell you where to get them.

these are not Cocoon, but they might be an option

BPL is redesigning the Cocoon line for Spring 2009. They recently had a sale on the old stock, so they may not have them available until the new line comes out in the Spring.

You might post to the BPL Gear Swap forum that you want to buy a pair, and see if you get any responses.

If you can't wait on the new Cocoon stuff (it is supposed to use a new insulation that is very good) you could check out:

Mont Bell UL Down Pants
Mont Bell Thermawrap Pants
Patagonia Micro Puff Pants
Integral Designs PLQ Pants
RAB Photon Pants
Mountain Hardwear Compressor Pants
Outdoor Research Neoplume Pants

I personally would go with the Mont Bell UL Down Pants (I use these pants for camp only). If I thought I would be hiking in them I would go with the Mont Bell Thermawraps.

Check out Cabelas down insulated underwear. They have seperate pants and tops. The pants would satisfy the requirement of lounging in camp and extending a sleeping bags range.

I like the idea of a 15 degree bag, with underwear like this. You have more flexibility than having a 0 or -15 degree bag.

If your not familiar with Cabelas you should browse the site. It's geared towards hunters and fishermen, but they have a great selection of outdoor clothes. Where else can you find camo boxers??

Three points about BPL's/BMW's Cocoon Pants:

- I'm pretty sure these are exclusive to BMW and aren't/won't be available from other dealers...just a guess, here.
- The Cocoon pants as we know them have been discontinued, http://www.backpackinglight.com/cgi-bin/backpackinglight/cocoon_pant.html
- As far as I know, the BMW Cocoon Pants were always synthetic insulation, never down.

I have a set, use them as part of my hammock sleep system, and like them a lot although they haven't been tried in really cold weather yet. If BMW updates them they should be real knock-outs.
