To answer your question, I must ask a question: What is your most lacking need in backpacking gear? Think about what you have. What is adequate? What is lacking? If everything is adequate, then it comes down to personal preference as to what creature comfort you want to improve upon. ;)

Also consider sales - a good deal might sway the choice as to what would be the best bang for the buck!

Two pairs of Smartwool PHd Light Mini Socks (http://www.campmor.com/outdoor/gear/Product___19384), a SnowPeak Titanium Spork (http://www.campmor.com/outdoor/gear/Product___65121), SnowPeak Titanium Trek 700 Cookset (http://www.campmor.com/outdoor/gear/Product___65143), and some Crocs Caymans (http://www.campmor.com/outdoor/gear/Product___19123).

That, IMO, is the best $100 spent on serious backpacking gear.

golite pinnacle pack
sublite sil tarptent
titanium cookset and spork
msr xgk ex stove
thermarest 3/4 backpackers pad
some 2.5lb ex army -10 synthetic sleeping bag
i have a heavy 2lb poncho which i use as tarp when i bring my byer hammock
have two pair of smartwool hiking socks.
i dont need and insulative or wicking clothes i dont think.
vibram 5 finger shoes as my camp shoes.
some 100' parachute line.
i dont have a bear bag come to think of it.
i have no water filtration system
i dont want to buy an alcohol stove as i plan on making the penny stove tonight.

Thanks!!!I have narrowed your list (thanks for the list) based on my experience. Here goes . . .

You are young, so your current thermarest pad may do, but if you are experiencing sleeplessness due to discomfort, consider a Big Agnes Dual Core Pad.

Seriously consider a sleeping bag upgrade, although it may not fit the $100 budget. I spent 20 years in the military - their gear is crap.

Lose or upgrade the poncho to lighter version.

Consider a 'bear vault' http://www.rei.com/product/768902
The weight is offset by complete confidence that your food is safe (especially if you use shelters), the hassle of hanging food, and it makes a nice table in conjunction with a ThermaRest chair or BA chair (multi-purpose).

Consider a Steripen - search 'steripen' as all that can be said has been said!

The first duplicate gear items I bought were sleeping bags, so I could have one for each season. You could get, for example, a Mountain Hardware Sunrise 50, 50 degree bag, for only $24 more.

Buy a $100 gift card for Sierra Trading Post, wait for the after Christmas Sale that they aways have,Google their keycodes for another 20% off and end up with $300 worth of gear.....and buy one pair of socks from Campmor so that you get their awesome catalog the rest of the year.

You just have to watch that because Sierra runs out of stuff and sizes real quick.

I would go with the down bag like the other guy suggested if you don't have one. Heard good things about it. Or the Cats meow (old style) which is also good.

Give that flint thing to your little brother if you have one.

Seal the poncho yet?

How do you like the drom? Big enough? I have often thought about those.

jrnj5k
11-26-2008, 09:30
what do you mean seal the poncho? The drom is definetly big enough for drinking from. I also will carry one or two gatorade bottles with water whether or not they will have anything in them depends on the situation.

Poncho- Depends what you got. If the seams are taped, you are set. Else you might need to seal the stitching with the proper goo. Not hard, kinda fun.

i would personally spend the 146 on christmas presents so i didnt have to spend as much of my "real" money on them :)

but if i had to choose, i need a new pair of convertible winter mittens/gloves, a blaze orange pack cover, and a new pair of trail runners
