An avalanche advisory for this (Thanksgiving) weekend has been posted for the White Mountains. Especially named were Huntington and Tuckerman Ravines. The weather this week has been unusual

Hikers are urged to take extra cautions and check the forecasts for the higher elevations.

Thanks for the heads up. It seems that there is a much greater quantity of snow per storm than usual in northern New England this season. I just had a nice pair of backcountry skis and bindings offered to me by a co-worker at a great price. Just what I need - another reason to spend money on toys that I don't really need. I guess that gives me an excuse to recycle some of my old stuff and be environmentally sensitive ;).

And with that warning i bring you the NOAA snowfall map (http://www.nohrsc.nws.gov/nsa/index.html?region=Northeast&year=2008&month=11&day=27&units=e) once again. Looking a bit like its time to get the snowshoes out in the higher elevations of the Northeast. Remember, be prepared for the worst when winter hiking, even if you're only going out for the day.:)

I hiked up to the RMC Gray Knob cabin on Mt Adams this weekend. Starting at about 3000 feet, the trail had at least 3 feet of snow with hard boilerplate on top. Usually strong enough to support my weight with 35 lb pack, but sometimes not.

This is a good base layer to keep the avalanche danger high all season. More snow coming down as I type, with frozen rain/rain expected to follow, so there will be yet another shear layer put down.

Never made it above tree line, as the winds were hoowling and snow was blowing, white out conditions. Been there, done that - too many times - so headed back down to home.
