I always get annoyed when I see the popular "This Car Climbed Mt. Washington" bumper stickers on cars. I'm sure I'm not the only one! So after seeing another one again today I decided to make this bumper sticker.

Enjoy!

Come live in the White Mountains, I rarely see them here. The tourists must wait until they're home to put them on.

I think the bumper stickers are great from a used car buyers view. If I ever see a car for sell with that sticker, I definately won't buy it. I hitched up the auto road on my thru to see the summit because I hiked the mt. at night. Smelled so much burning brake pads and smoking rotors that day. Plus the smell of radiator fluid as it blows out of the pressure valve.

When I climbed it, I got to the top and immediately saw a car drive over a man's foot and then stop the car on it, unaware that the man was screaming and pounding on the car. Then he moved the car and the walker yelled some more at him. My friend next to me said, "See, this is exactly why cars shouldnt be allowed up here." Although, I'm not really sure why the walking guy allowed his foot to be run over, I think he was to blame as well.

Not sure what the issue is here and why the annoyance. What if the sticker was on a handicapped van??

And why wouldn't one buy a car because it drove up Mt Washington??? As if to say that if someone drives up the auto road and puts a Bumper Sticker on their car, the car has been neglected. Get real.

I've been up the auto road 3 times. The first was with our 1 year old, the second was a week after major surgery and the third was just because I could. Sharing 1 mountain in the range with folks who prefer to drive up it is not a bad thing.

There's also a bumper sticker on cafe press: "This car could not climb Mt Washington"
While I was on the site I bought one I've been wanting since last year for my good and faithful 2003 Astro van "This car drove the Alaska Highway - both ways dammit!" :)

Are you suggesting that this "great mountain" be limited to fully mobile, healthy hikers? Plenty of other "great mountains" in the northeast without roads.

Well even if I did, it's too late now isn't it? Restoring an amazing mountain summit to it's original beauty and getting rid of the disneyworld tourist activity.....fine by me.

It's also a place where a lot of weather observation goes on. And as you know, the weather up there is kinda special. The observatory is occupied year-round. TOF could fill your head with what goes on there. Point is, Mt. Washington summit hasn't been "pristine" for the last 200 years or so. As environmental battles go, it's nowhere on anybody's priority list.

Personally, I thought most of the Whites were Disney-like with all the day-hiking crowd. Doesn't bother me in the least. Everyone knows what to expect, more or less, before arriving, so if that is not what you are looking for, then hike somewhere else. Simple.

The lines of people on the Franconia Ridge sure seemed like I was waiting on a ride at some kind of amusement park. Then all the poop and flies everywhere made me feel like I was in a third world amusement park.

But it is one of the most beautiful places in the Northeast.

Do it during the week, or after Columbus Day, in winter or even on a full moon.

If you get up at the crack of down to start the Franconia Ridge (my two favorite times of the day, the other being sunset), you'll have the trail to yourself.

Yeah, many places can get ultra crowded (I'm looking at you Colorado 14ers! (http://www.14ers.com/)), but there is no reason to skip a place of extreme beauty because of crowds. Just find a different time to do it.

I will not hiker 14ers for the most part mainly because of the crowds.

But something like Longs Peak IS a beautiful, unique and awe inspiring summit. So my friends and I have hiked it during a full moon and have the mountain to ourselves.

Same logic can apply to other places.

That's my .02 worth.

I was surprised and impressed with the hike up to Greenleaf Hut, first time I did it in winter. You start getting great views (to the west) halfway up the mountain, whereas in summer, you don't get unbroken views 'till you're above the hut. We headed up too late to make the summit (and dawdled too long at the hut.) But awesome views of the sun setting over Canon on the way back down.

Decided to visit Gorham in mid-august 08. We stayed at Dolly Copp for a week.

August 14th - 15th, Me and a buddy did the full presidential traverse.

On August 16th, Me, the Mrs. and my two friends drove up to the top in my crappycrapmobile (Ford Escort.)

On the 17th, we climbed just Mount Washington from Pinkham Notch, Up Tuckermans Ravine then back down the same way. Packs were full of like 20lbs of camera equipment, clothes, water and such)

So I've got the following bumper stickers:

- This Car Climbed Mount Washington -
- I climbed Mount Washington -
- TUCKERMANS RAVINE -
- PRESIDENTIAL TRAVERSE -

I fear people may think I just drove to the top and bought every bumper sticker. Meh, the true prize was the experience... and photo op.

In smaller letters underneath it should say "because I can't afford to buy the gas to drive up", although prices are temporarily down:p. Nice wheels .

Screw the Gas... I had to buy new brake pads driving down (My Car wouldn't engine brake in first gear, it just switched automatically... stupid Ford) I ended up having to pull off at EVERY pulloff and wait 10 minutes. Took lots of pictures. Smelled a lot of brake pads.

One day I'll hike the full AT through it... when I'm looking for something easy.

Agreed it's nowhere on the priority list; that said, I found the summit disgusting. You want an observation tower, fine. Does it have to be a tourist trap, some sort of mountaint-top temple to consumerism? The place was a circus, loud and obnoxious after so long in the quiet of mountain and wood; I couldn't wait to get away from it.

On the plus side, and perhaps because of the contrast, the rest of that beautiful blue sky day was among the high points of my hike (no pun intended). It was very quiet on the way to Madison Springs Hut, where we stealthed up on the ridge (near the pond above the hut) in sight of Washington. Beautiful, quiet, starry, and wild: the way the mountains OUGHT to be.

The Osgood ridge climb to Madison hut on the AT, southbound from Pinkam notch, was a most memorable NH White Mountain experience for my wife and myself back in the late 80's.

I took a solo side trip Mt Adams after dinner at AMC's Madison hut, had the summit of the 2nd highest mnt in the northeast to myself at sunset.
It was raining, thunder and lightning was in the area!

Anybody want to buy a "Classic"....... (THIS CAR CLIMBED MT WASHINGTON)......... bumper sticker while we are on the subject?

You hot shots that use the valet parking shouldn't mind that. I park my own vehicle and there is no charge. There's no charge for sitting on the back porch enjoying the great view of the cog railway and My Washington. The tea or hot chocolate is very reasonably priced. I was Googling to find some information about the bumper stickers and this post was the #1 Google return for Mt. Washington bumper sticker. So that's what brought me here today. It's bad press for hikers as it makes the guy who started the thread and the folks who agrees with him look elitist. I'm not a total slouch mind you as I've climbed Katahdin, via the Cathedral Trail no less, but, you shouldn't be so negative about the Mt. Wash Auto Road. I have travelled extensively thru NE as my business is with tourism, and I happen to think that the Auto Road is one of the top gems tourism-wise in all of New England. I am recommending to folks all the time that they go there. So blame part of that crowd at the top on me.

Anyway, there are lots of folks out there who do not commune with nature on a regular basis, and who will never look out from a mountain peak unless a car, cog railway, tram or something other than their own two feet take them there. Could be they are too young, too old, too infirm, too poor to afford the time and gear to get into serious hiking, or maybe they will be in the area only one half day and don't have the time to make the trek. Whatever the reason, they are simply not going to go on their own two feet to a place like Mt. Washington. However, try to imagine how the view from the summit of Mount Washington has the potential to be a life-changing experience. Maybe it will prompt a new found admiration for nature , it might prompt them to get into hiking or conservation activities.

I've been up the road twice, and as a photographer with 30+ pounds of professional camera equipment, my primary goal was to take photos. And, I got some fabulous photos because I picked my days carefully. Surely my photos are no less spectacular because my camera was driven to the top?

Surely my photos are no less spectacular because my camera was driven to the top?

hypocritical elitists

drovemtwashtwice joined WB and named himself for this tread, good stuff.
I think he/she has a point about outsiders looking in see what we write here on WB. The Mt. Washington auto road is pretty cool as far as I'm concerned.

How about a sticker that says "This hiker cut your brake lines atop Mt. Washington." ?

Pssst: kinda silly to cut brake lines at the top. If you are going to do something, do it at the bottom to disable the car from making the climb in the first place.

I've never driven up it, don't care to. I've walked up it many times from different sides.
No big deal, imo.
My son climbed it with me when he was 8 years old. To him it was a big deal.
I bought him a t-shirt.
Cars straining up the auto road probably add a great deal to the pollution found on Washington and the surrounding area. The Cog "Smog" railway's smoke sent me into a choking coughing fit one day when the wind was out of the south and I was headed north on the AT (no, I didn't moon it :p).

I see nothing wrong with the road. If it wasnt there then my best friend in his wheel chair couldnt enjoy the view. Nature doesnt revolve around hikers like some think it does!

Just as a point of historical interest, the auto road was originally a stage coach road.

My 84 mustang was the best for scooting along that road. Kept the manual in 2nd all the way up and down. Didn't have to break on the way down. You NC people would have been proud (and would have had a hard time keeping up).

We have t-shirts that say "This body climbed Mt Washington."

I made sure I bought one of those when I climbed it.
