I'm going on a two day trip in two weeks in VA. We are going to cover about 26 miles. I was hoping for some help with my gear list. This is my first try at weighing all of my gear and entering it into a spreadsheet. Please let me know if there is anything I'm missing, or anything that I should leave behind. Thanks.

Long Feet, Try attaching your Spreadsheet File (assuming its Excel's .xls format) to this thread, I think most people are having a hard time digesting this.

I plan on doubling up the two torso lenght pads, using my bag under my feet, and putting the entire Down to Earth pad over everything. It should be really warm.

Water 1 Liter 35.3 2 4.42Not to get technical, but a liter of water weighs about 1kg or 2.2 lbs. Yer a lil off on yer calculations. However, on the plus side, it does mean your pack is lighter than you thought. :banana

"Water 1 Liter 35.3 2 4.42" means 35.3 oz. quantity 2, for a total of 4.42 lbs. It's my understanding that water is only 1 kg. when it is distilled water. I just found that number as the average weight with minerals. Thanks.

personally i'd carry 3 pairs of socks in the winter. if you have to double up for warmth then you still have another pair for camp or allowed to dry

you have a nice, expensive, well-thought out list otherwise

also, i'd only carry 1 set of backup batteries (both AA and 123) if i were you. if you need to use one you'll be able to resupply again before you get through the 1st backup. some will argue to not carry any

also, headlamp and led light? is there a reason you've got 2 lights?

"those GG spinn chaps are sexy btw. i will be looking into those at 1.6 oz. it appears gg is all out atm"

Try these http://www.mountainlaureldesigns.com/shop/product_info.php?cPath=37&products_id=77&osCsid=cce90df43e914e6579d82f04355b9525

They are exactly the same, but have a shock cord to hold them down. I might modify mine to have the same functionality.

I reevaluating my lighting. I'm going to try and find the lightest 4 red LED light that I can strap or clip on. I have been using the one red LED as a backup, but it won't work for me as a primary. I need to have both hands free as I use poles. I would not think of night hiking without poles. The red LEDs are great as they don't kill your night vision as much.

So to make a long story short, On my next weekend trip I'm just going to be taking the one red LED, as I don't plan on doing any night hiking.

Thanks for your help on my list. I'm narrowing the weight down, slowly but surely.

"Dude",

I don't expect that you have had any major knee surgery and had to learn to walk again. For a long time the doctors were telling me I was going to have to be in pain and never walk normally for the rest of my life. My dreams of hiking were the reason that I am now making miles and elevation without hurting my knee. Lightening my load in as scientific a manner as possible has been the methodology I've employed to be able to hike at all. so, hike your own hike. Carry an anvil up Everest for all I care, but don't defecate on someone else's dream. Why are you even commenting on someone's gear list if you have nothing to contribute? </rant>

Panzer

I had a pair of rain chaps way back in the '70s. Gave up on them for three main reasons:

1) Nothing to protect your butt when you wanted to sit down.
2) Gators provided most of the same protection and were cooler.
3) Mine needed to be tied to a belt of some kind. Since the only one I wore was the pack belt, it became a hassle whenever taking the pack off.

i'd like em just to keep my thighs dry. sitting down isn't an issue for me since i carry a small piece of closed cell foam for a sit pad. these have a shock cord around the top that takes care of your #3.

long feet don't let that guy get you down and don't feel the need to explain yourself to anyone here. some people on here are just plain grumpy (as is true w/ anywhere in life). like i said before, i think you have a very well thought out and impressive gear list...

hikingPA and Panzer1,

Thanks for your support. I'm going to keep on chipping down that weight. I'm thinking of getting these inov-8 shoes http://www.inov-8.com/Products-Detail.asp?PG=PG1&L=27&P=5050973028 to lose a pound off of my feet, and the Backpacking Light Thorofare Trekking Pants at http://www.backpackinglight.com/cgi-bin/backpackinglight/thorofare_trekking_pant.html

This could save two pounds of gear worn. I love that! Thanks again all.
