I was at EMS the other day and was looking for the good old Aqua Mira Drops. They apparently have a ton of new products out or at least they are ones I have never seen.
One in particular is a water filter that treats 50 gallons of water and attaches right to a hydration hose or a bottle and you drink right out of the filter. It looked interesting but I am not sure how you would hike with it attached to a hydration system. It seems too big to clip on the outside of a pack.
Has anyone ever used this? If so how did it go?

seems like a good idea, one of his negatives was the draw needed to suck the water down, but this is the same problem all instant use filters have. in the winter it would freeze. you would not be able to blow the water out of the line, would you:confused:

Thanks for the link.
And good point about winter freezing.

I see from their website that the item lists at $19.95.

Assuming you'd pump 4 quarts a day at least 4 days a week, and a 26-week trip, we're talking AT LEAST 400 quarts of water over the course of your trip.

And you'll probably end up pumping more than that.

So if the item is good for 50 quarts, then you'd need to replace it something like eight times.

Meaning you'd be paying at least, repeat, at least $160.00 for water purification over the course of your trip.

That's kind of a high figure, and significantly more than if you just used regular Aquamira.

My last time out, I used Polar Pure. Good for 2000 quarts, and it cost me $12.99. Once.

Just a thought.

Jack, it is good for 50 GALLONS not quarts. Still cost $40 according to your numbers, but not as bad as $160.

I use the Frontier Pro as part of my gravity filter with a 2 liter platypus. From the specs it does about 190 liters so roughly 80 refills on my 2lt system. At less than 2oz if I was going to go for a really extended trip I'd carry a spare.

I'll stick with Aqua Mira drops.

Whoops! Thanx for pointing that out. Fifty gallons are obviously way different than quarts!!

We often have to carry water here usually several quarts, however after a few miles they turn into gallons.

My thought was not to take it on a thru-hike, but it would last about 1-2 months.
My main concern is the fact that you have to drink directly out of it, and that it might be hard to attach to the outside of a pack.
