View Full Version : Baxter Peak
In all the years I have looked at photos of Katahdin from Abol Bridge, I have never figured out where Baxter Peak is located. Big K is sort of flat near the summit.
Also what side of the mountain does the Hunt Trail go up? (From an Abol Bridge perspective) Maybe someone tech savy can post a photo and trace the path of the AT up the mountain.
Top center. Somewhat hidden.
The side you are looking at. Part way down it slides to your right in the woods.
Odd the way it lines up. Plenty of other fine hills to add to the distortion.

The ridge on the left coming down toward the observer is the route of the Hunt Trail. Close to the Tableland it gets vertical with smooth rock (picture a vertical Mahoosuc Notch without the moss).
Better description than mine.
Would you agree that what looks to be the high point is South Baxter?

From a half mile north of Abol bridge, just where the trail crosses Abol Stream on the snowmobile bridge, you can see the summit sign with binoculars.

In this pic from the bridge, the AT goes up the ridge line on the left onto the Hunt Spur. (Where the cloud shadow is) It climbs up the high point above, which is the "Gateway," and then across the Tableland. That landslide scar in the middle of the photo is the Abol Slide Trail. About 1/4 from the point where that trail hits the Tableland it connects with the AT at Thoreau Spring. A mile or so further out of sight and to the right is Baxter Peak. See how the top looks like it's in three sections? 1/3 on the left, 1/3 in the center with the Abol Slide going up, and 1/3 on the right? Baxter Peak is the high bit in the center of the righthand 1/3. That's the Knife Edge slanting down and away on the far right.
