Alright, it's a catching title, but the fact of the business is I'm looking for a down vest, and upon examination, men's vests appear to look like they are cut for a waffle shaped human being. I happen to not be, or know, any waffle shaped human beings, so I'd like something that fits better. I keep catching pictures of vests that appear to conform and hug you body, (which sounds like an obviously better choice if you're trying to stay warm) but they are all women's. Here's one example of 800 fill patagonia vests: http://www.google.com/products?q=down+vest+800+patagonia&btnG=Search+Products&hl=en&show=dd

So what's your feedback? Buy a women's vest? Know anyone that sells human shaped vests in a more virile fashion?

And back to the topic

I only find that the cheapy vests are equipped to handle a beer gut, or to keep a midget/toddler/wiener dog close to your stomach.

I'd get whatever fits, might want to make sure that you can wear some layers under the jacket though. But the choice of waffle shaping, be it in the chest or the gut, is up to you.

To actually answer your question (altho the picture was ROTFLMAO, & I love "Rocky Picture"):

WEAR WHAT WORKS! If someone laughs at you, its their problem, not yours especailly if they (dressed as waffles) are nearing hypothermia & you are toasty warm.

My example:
Most "long johns" are way too warm for my metabolisim, so for just that little touch of extra insulation, I wear panty hose, THEY WORK, so I use them! If I wore traditional mens long johns, I would sweat, I would then be wet, & wet = cold.

So, do you wear your hoses with your "kilt" when you hike into town? :-?

So who reads the tags, and has any idea if its a mens or womens size? Buy what fits.

Please note that with my buy what fits gear, I'm not color coordinated, either.

Oh well.

Sure do! If it's cold (under 35ish), anything warmer, No way, I'd be too hot.

Buy what fits and makes you comfortable of course. It's not like it matters if you were something that was "designed" for women or not. And anyone who acts like it does matter has got some serious insecurities. Over half of my gear is men's gear because I am so tall and women's gear doesn't really fit me most of the time. No one's ever looked at me all funny and said, "OMG why u wearin men's stuff? Haha!" and even if they did, wouldn't bother me.

Do what keeps you warm and makes you happy!

for some reason, it's harder for us guys to make the step to wearing women's clothing than it is for women to wear men's, even in a justified hiking situation. I know back in the day it was different (women wearing pants? Like, OMG!) but these days, women get to wear whatever, while men get called homos or other names for it.

I haven't had the need to do this. I like the idea of the kilt (women always looked more comfy in skirts/dresses than I ever felt in pants on a hot day when one had to dress up), I've just never done it. I don't have a major problem personally with the idea; though I wouldn't straight-up cross-dress, cuz that's just weird.

There is an item of women's clothing that I would recommend - many of our military boys wear these for the long hikes. Try on a pair of calf height nylons under your socks. They wick perspiration, help keep your feet cool when it's hot, and warm when it's cold, and do a good job of stopping, or at least, forestalling, blisters.
