So if you want to do a photo journal as a way to log/display/keep up with your photos what's the best way to do it? Have seen maps that display a link to photos taken at a particular location and that has an appeal as it seems to eliminate the need to record dates/locations. When I was asking a mapmaker about this they said they used a program that linked/coorindated the time stamps on their photos with their gps. He also suggested using Google earth/map as it was a standard app. Any thoughts from anyone that has done this or knows what I'm talking about would be appreciated ( I'm obviously going in circles here).

Seems like this is the right place for this thread - if not please feel free to move it.

Google Maps/Earth is the way to go. You can put individual pics at a location or a whole album at one location. We use this a lot on our website. www.tehcc.org (http://www.tehcc.org)

If you want to experiment, I'd allow it on my webpage:
http://www.thetrailwiki.org/

I suppose you could write out a Journal / Log on your "User:Username" page then with the proper tags, I suppose I could track thru-hikers on the main map of my page automatically

Meditate on this, I will. Any ideas?

Ok well you've got me thinking

I drew up a Quick Example here (http://thetrailwiki.org/User:Totem)

http://thetrailwiki.org/User:Totem

My apologies if years have passed and someone is reading this post... My page is versatile and it's contents may be completely different from what I speak of now...

The page you see is a User Information Page (everyone who signs up gets their own.)

I implemented a map with the Appalachian Trail Drawn (in black,) In Red I included Data straight from my GPS (AT I have walked within the past year) and that Red Balloon is a link to an Image I took that was "Geocoded" which is when a Camera Automatically Tags the coordinates of a pic...

You can also just manually find the coordinates of a location you took a picture later... its not that big a deal really. Instead of showing a link to the image, I can also make it thumbnail it instead (with time and more coding.)

I also wrote up a quick and dirty journal entry to also test if that too would be feasible. Let me know what you think.

Here is an article (http://www.zackvision.com/weblog/2006/09/geotagging-photos.html) on 'geotagging' photo. Information can be saved with the photo file using the EXIF (http://www.zackvision.com/weblog/2006/09/geotagging-photos.html) area of the photo file.

Thanks everybody (we need one of those bananas that says thanks- unless thats what the welcome one is for) Thanks!!

Part of the question is also about gps. Have searched WB and still unsure about which/what gps. Is one better than another for this particular application? Someone mentioned SPOT and I have seen their map. Looked pretty good. Are there any advantages to having the co-ords displayed?

Not really... It's a good way to tack on $100 more to the price of a camera.

I no longer have a camera capable of GeoTagging, but I get along just fine. If you remember where you took the pic, you can just get the coordinates later, or, have separate GPS unit and just write down the coordinates.
