No question in my mind. Datto's journal was the best. I looked forward to each new post.

thanks for asking the question Gunn and Hootch for the answer. I've been reading Marta's posts for a while now and am now enjoying her self deprecating humor in her through hike journal.

I've read a bunch, but my all-time favorites are Birdlegs from 2007 and Break-a-leg from 2005.

Jan Liteshoe's, for sure. She also wrote a great book (The Ordinary Adventurer) about her thru hike of The Long Trail. You can get it on the Green Mountain Club's web site.

this has always been one of my favorites, from 1983. A couple of books I would recommend are Jan Liteshoe's, already mentioned, and Model T's book, "Walking on the Happy Side of Misery" I think you can find them both at Amazon.com

Dunno how I forgot about that one. I've read some of Jan's, she's an excellent author.

Big Red's from 2003 was the other one I read that year (Jan's being the first)

I enjoyed reading Jangles (http://www.trailjournals.com/janehollingsworth) too. You might read Chardonnay, Mouse or Baro's book to learn more about the latter portion of her hike.

A.T. enthusiasts facinated by the natural world are likely to enjoy Southgate (http://www.trailjournals.com/southgate).

I really enjoy reading Gopher's stuff. Link to his AT hike is above.

And thanks for starting this thread. It's great to learn he did the PCT this year. I'm so jealous.

Hey Shades.... I forgot to put that in my last post but I had also read Chardonnay's journal as well.... and just got Baro's book in this last week and am currently reading it.... but you are right Cardonnay's was a good read too.... I haven't read Mouse's journal yet but read it when I'm done with Baro's book...... I guess Jangles hit a chord with me because I related so closely to her faith.... and I enjoyed Big Red's journal because of the physical challenges he faced and overcame in his thru.... Alot of journals I've read haven't really been that good but every once in a while you come across a real inspiring and informative journal out there which really touches your heart.

I do believe that alot of people view a thru-hike but from the standpoint of logistical challenge but as I've read more journals, I've come to see that there many more dynamics in play on the trail as well..... which is why I read journals to begin with.....

I definitely second (third?) your recommendation of George Steffanos' journal. I believe he wrote it with the intention of eventually publishing it as a book, and it would be a good one!
