Maybe this is how some blind hikers manage on the trails. It's very interesting that this man can even 'see' facial expressions! :-?

My daughters acuity is 20/200 and is considered legally blind but manages to use her auditory senses to make up for her poor vision.

I saw another amazing story on TV about a young boy who was blind since birth. He could also negotiate city streets, and obstacle courses. His method was to make gentle "clicks" with his tongue, he could then detect objects by listening to the echoes - a primitive bat-type sonar. He was very amazing.

Not to long ago there was a blind man running the Iron Man in Hawaii and a man pushing his disabled son. Some do so much with so little and some do so little with so much.

Mrs. Baggins,

Enjoyed chattin' with you and Crazy Horse at Trail Days. You're both quite entertaining.

Won't be there this year, because I have illusions of hiking the PCT. So if you see me at Trail Days it means I've dropped out after a week!

Fascinating stuff.

To me, the obvious next step is to blindfold the man and ask him to navigate a course. If he can't do it, that proves that he really is using information from his eyes (even if not consciously aware of it). If he can, it means he's compensating for his blindness with some other sense unconnected to his eyes. I'd be very interested to see those results.
