The Gear List Shakedown... a comfortable 3 season plus

On my last thru hike, when I was only a mere three days from Katahdin, I had the honor of encountering a SOBO who most generously offered to shake down my pack to help me reduce weight (!@#!?!).

Well, needless to say, I graciously declined his offer for assistance. Quite a few expletives came to mind at the audacity of this fellow, but since then, I've come to realize that his gesture was merely symbolic of the kind and caring nature of the AT Community.

In memory of that event, I've decided to post my current list here for critique and criticism. So Shake it on down, folks!

I think the 8th item under Misc. is to heavy and should be left out.

First Aid/Repair, Glasses, spare w/ case,77.00,

I would suggest either getting your eyes cut with a laser to save the 77 grams for $4,000 or just suck it up and walk it blind it has been done before.

i see a couple of redundant items in your list, although you made it on your last thru, so i hesitate to critique it. i will anyway, since you posted it :D

i see a couple pairs of pants. i understand the running shorts (instead of wearing the short part of the convertibles) but also see convertibles and rain pants listed.

windshirt + driducks? driducks work just as well as a windbreaker, although i've never gotten into windshirts and some guys carry them everywhere as their most versitile piece of equipment.

i'm interested what you use the baby wipes for. i don't know if i've seen them on a gear list...

Thanks all... nice to see the comments.

Eye Laser surgery-- I love the idea, but not cost effective at 51.95 per gram of savings.

hikingPA, Good point about the running shorts. They were a part of my list before I hopped on the convertible pants bandwagon. Somehow they got dinosaured in. They're off the list now. 76 grams saved.

The driducks are a replacement for what was much heavier rain gear. They seem so flimsy, I'm not sure I'd trust them to be durable enough for daily use. So, for the meantime, the windshirt stays, although eventually upgrade to Patagonia Helium or something similarly light. At this point it's either buy gear or fund the hike.

I do feel as if I've been struggling with finding the right clothing combinations.

The baby wipes? Actually not an uncommon item. Lone Wolf is correct (as ever). Nothing like a nice smelling bath after a hot sweaty day.

Matthewski, I'd love gear lists almost as much as I love comfort, safety and fun. It would be nice to see how much your list weighs. Mine, it weighs in at 3 grams (a single 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper).

But seriously the suggestions are more than welcome....
