I just got a package from Amazon with Birdlegs' new book in it, entitled "How to Hike the A.T.: The Nitty Gritty Details of a Long Distance Trek" , by Michelle Ray. She 's finally seeing her long time project in print. I'll be checking it out and posting a review on my web site ASAP. Lots of her own illustrations that are also very cool. Great self portrait on page 109.

Just ordered it. We had dinner with her at Delaware Water Gap. Real nice girl. Glad she got it done.

aren't there already "how to" books for the AT? how is this one different?

Most of the books I've read about the AT are not "how to" books. They are usually the persons experience while hiking. It's kind of like listening to an old friend tell you their story. Jan Liteshoe's book (although it is about the Long Trail) is a great example.

Yes, there are a lot of "How To" and other AT books out there and we probably have too many of them now. The authors are generally interesting, like the folks on WB, where everyone views things through their unique perspective. After sharing a nice meal and great conversation with her, I think it should be a good read. Though to be honest, my reason for buying it is probably less about the book and more about supporting her effort.
