I want to end this argument once and for all, and the best way to do so is to create a poll.

There is no argument to end. It is officially recognized as Neels Gap (http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnispublic/f?p=106:3:2316861217589359::NO:3:P3_FID,P3_TITLE:3 56662%2CNeels%20Gap). Everything else here is forum puffery. Everything you want to know about the current recognized name and previous names or variants is clearly identified in the link above.

Call it what you want. We all know where it is.

None of the above.Knielz Gap?

Yesterday I was meeting 3 people at Wolfpen Gap on the DRT but one of them headed off toward Hogpen Gap. Fortunately he called before going too far out of his way.

Later when we returned to Wolfpen a car with some very confused looking guys drove up. They were looking for Hogpen Gap.

Wolfpen, Hogpen: Two places with different names but still similar enough to fool people.

Neel's Gap, Neel Gap: Tell one person to meet you at Neel Gap, another person to meet you at Neel's Gap and both will go to the same place. That's all that really matters.

It's "kneels" gap. The place where hikers fall on their knees when they realize there's cold pepsis there. At least it worked for me.

Forgtown Gap..... keep the original name. The gap in question had this name, long before Mr. Neel surveyed the highway route. Also known as Mountain Crossing, Winton Porter"s store, the rock house, and the motocycle turnaround at the top of the hill.

Is there a town or community in Georgia called Grassy Gap?

No, I don't think there is, so Wolf has a point.

There sure is, I've been there.

Same as I've frequently visited Neel Gap.

Come on people, middle school English punctuation.

Gap of Neel = Neel's with the possessive apostrophe.

By the estimable logic you just presented, Sly, the beautiful New Hampshire trail crossing that you and I have both visited, should be called "Crawford's Notch", right? Cuz, as you said, we're talking about the Notch of Crawford, so it should = and be universally known as Crawford's Notch, right?

Um, no, it shouldn't, and it isn't. There are plenty of places named after individuals that don't use the possessive.

Back to Middle Scool, Sly. You missed something. :D

LOL... I actually can't remember when I learned that ****. However, since the possessive apostrophe isn't being used, I'll go with Neel Gap. Neels without the apostrophe is just wrong. (even spell check thinks so)

Jack Tarlin

And most noteworthy of all, let's not forget Harpers Ferry, WV.

All sorts of places, just like Neel Gap, neither have, nor require an apostrophe.

Wolf says there is no Grassy Gap in GA, yet you say there is. You have been there, yet you say Wolf has a point when he says there is no Grassy Gap. Maybe I'm just missing the town connection but what does being a town have to do with it? Grassy Gap is a place, just like Neels Gap is a place, and many places have recognized names. I guess my only question to you and those who have seen the USGS Geographic Names Information System listing and believe it is wrong, then who is the official arbiter on such matters?

Lone Wolf

grassy gap is not listed in the data book or companion

Jack Tarlin

Look at your AT map. Approx a mile north of Gooch Gap on the trail.

I know you don't like GNIS but here's Grassy Gap (http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnispublic/f?p=106:3:4551953092281910::NO:3:P3_FID,P3_TITLE:3 27990%2CGrassy%20Gap)

Pikes Peak should have an apostrohe. it's named after Zebulon Pike

Yup, it probably should. Any English majors on Whiteblaze to confirm this?

Added: Now we're getting someplace...

Originally the peak was called "Pike's Peak", but in 1891, the newly-formed US Board on Geographic Names (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/US_Board_on_Geographic_Names) recommended against the use of apostrophes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apostrophe) in names, so officially the name of the peak does not include an apostrophe. In addition, in 1978 the Colorado state legislature passed a law mandating the use of "Pikes Peak" only. Even so, the old name is often seen.

It's all the US Board on Geographical Names fault!
