Hey folks...I'm starting my NOBO thru attempt during the third week of March. I'm trying to get an idea of where in the world (well, on the trail) I might be as an average speed hiker on the trail on the Fourth of July. I know that no one can give a definitive answer, but an average guess would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

That would be about 110 days, so if you were to average 12 miles a day, zero's included, that would be about 1320 miles and put you near Unionville,NY. Averaging 15 miles a day would put you near Danby, Vt.

I would put you at Duncannon.

Most people will be back at home watching the fireworks and saying "if only..."

an average hiker on speed would be waking up at a bar asking hisself, "where am i?"

Allowing for zeros and considering that you're 25, I would guess you'd probably be in New York or Connecticut somewhere.
Why use the word 'attempt', what ever happened to positive thinking?? Long distance hiking is as much mental as it is physical.

'attempt' is what the majority do. few finish. realism, not negative thinking

I like zeros! 1990 I was at Pine Grove Furnace and 2002 I was in Maryland just north of Harpers Ferry. Started March 25 and 17 finished September 18 and 11.
No reason to rush!

not to be a smart ass, but if you went to trailjournals.com and picked 10 or 20 reports and then went to July 4 on each, you would have a pretty good idea.

We all think we're typical. HA!

Ok, I started on March 27th and was about the middle of the pack the whole way. On the 4th of July I was in the north end of PA; specifically, that night I stayed at the Allentown Shelter, drying (and burning, sadly) my sopping socks at the fire.

So, since you'd be starting earlier, I'd guess you'd probably be in New Jersey or New York, on average. If you hike fast, you'll be farther; if you hike slower, you'll be back a bit.

Thanks! At noon on the Fourth of July you will be about halfway across that little hemlock glade as you slab up ANthony's Nose just past the Bear Mountain Bridge. Unless you have to wait for a car to go by before you can cross Rte 9. Then you would only be a third of the way across the hemlock glade.

I started March 15th and I entered Connecticut on July 1st. I was 57 years old at the time. I took 7 zeros up to that point. It all depends on how well you are at avoiding the town vortex.

Assuming you're planning a typical thru-hike, i.e. one that lasts close to 180 days, and assuming you hike at an average pace and take the typical ammount of time off, if you start the 3rd week in March, my guess is you'll be somewhere in Pennsylvania. If I had to guess, I'd say you'll be somwhere between Boiling Springs and Port Clinton, with Duncannon being a really good possibility.

My guess is the Delaware Water Gap.
On my thru, i started in the third week of March and on July 4th I was at the base of Katahdin. Summited the 5th.

Thart's commendable, but the number of folks who want to do the Trail in under four months is probably less than 2% of thru hikers. Most folks are neither capable of this sort of mileage, nor do they want to hike this fast even if they could.

I started 3 April and watched a great fire works display in Harpers Ferry on the 4th of July. Pat was sick for 3 weeks at Fontana dam and she summited the 5th of Oct. I summited the 7th of Oct. Some folks start slow and increase their speed as they go while others take time off along the way for all kinds of things. Some hikes go as planned and some don't. It might be the only thru hike you get so have the best hike you can.:)

I agree, just thought it was interesting that he asked where he'd be on July 4th and I checked where I was and it was Katahdin.

Lone wolf, he means an average hike speed...

Does it matter?! You're away from everything that you are trying to get away from. That's all that counts. At least, that's the way it was for me.

Well, if you happen to be in Duncannon on July 4th, look me up. I do something for hikers in town that day including any one or more of the following - feed, movie, fireworks.

FWIW, Many thru-hikers head past us on the PA NJ Border by late June.

what what?!?

I started April 1st...hiked the average 6 month hike...and walked into Duncannon on the 4th after a 27 mile day. We did get to see postponed fireworks from the viewpoint just before Peter's Mountain Shelter. Word to the wise...this is a great place to camp but not an awesome fireworks spot. The ridge to the South obscured all but the very tops of the show. It was like looking at a bunch of slowly melting light-up football domes.

Don't worry about it........take your time and enjoy the hike.
Duncannon, PA would be nice. NUTS now I have to go downstairs and get a beer.

Right, better spots for a south view towards Harrisburg would be to walk up to the top of the power or pipe lines that cross the A.T. between Clarks Ferry Shelter and PA 225 overpass. East of 225 is obscured by Third Mountain (which splits into Stony and Sharp Mts by the time the A.T. reaches them)
