I heard the REI super clearance was starting this Friday which is earlier than usual. Just an FYI...

BTW can anyone confirm?

Tell me more about this REI super clearance....

floyd242
01-08-2009, 00:01
They have it twice a year, summer/winter. It's usually around President's day. They have a clearance first for a couple of weeks then they mark everything that didn't sell 50% off the clearance price (super clearance). Basically anything in the store or on the website that has a price that ends in .83 will be 50% off. My whole wardrobe is basically REI super clearance stuff at this point :)

Summit

Confirmed! I got a flyer in the mail a couple of days ago. It's called the "Winter Clearance Sale" not to be confused with the "Holiday Clearance Sale" going on right now! I think the sale starting Friday is broader in scope of products and steeper discounts than the current one. Keep in mind (my experience) that if you have the luxury of a store near you, I have always found items on sale locally that are not listed online. I think that's because local store managers have some freedom to try and reduce their own excess inventory.

floyd242
01-08-2009, 00:21
Yeah you can go scope out the store early... anything ending in .83 will be 50% off :)

No code, it's automatic if you are a memeber

dradius
01-08-2009, 09:43
do you have to be a member to get the sale price?

hikergirl1120

no but you have to be a memeber to get the additional clearance.

Cabin Fever
01-08-2009, 10:41
I don't think you have to be a member on some sales, but a lot promotions are members only. It's $20 for a lifetime membership. It's a no brainer. I have saved hundreds being a member.

hikergirl1120
01-08-2009, 11:07
Yea and at the end of every year you get a check for 10% of everything that you buy at full price. I don't buy much at full price but it's still a nice benefit of being a member.

Not to mention the "garage" sales...

Hooch
01-08-2009, 11:17
Yea and at the end of every year you get a check for 10% of everything that you buy at full price. If you're lucky, you can help out someone at the store who doesn't have a membership and let them use yours. I let a guy use my card to buy a canoe for him and his son, so I'll get the dividend back on the $800 he spent. :D:banana

ki0eh
01-08-2009, 11:40
I couldn't either - needed something for an upcoming trip and had a gift card. What I don't remember being able to do before was to use the dividend before getting the mailer, which I just did a couple of days ago. Maybe that's been a hidden feature, or maybe it's just new and undocumented since they re-did their web site mid-last year.

Are there any restrictions on that(like only for this sale)? This is the first year that I have a larger dividend and when I checked the REI site it said dividends were mailed out in March, so I was disappointed as I was thinking of spending it now.

Cabin Fever
01-08-2009, 11:49
I think 2008 dividends will be issued in March. Once they are issued, they will start asking if you want to use it when at the store or online. At least, that has been my experience.

YES I used my '08 dividend, actually before the sale, but in calendar '09, online. During check out there was a click box or something about using your dividend and I clicked it, thinking it would tell me "go to hell, you already spent it you dummy" but instead it took off a new amount from my order! I never saw this before which is why I'm thinking it's a new hidden feature.

I am like you in that I don't like paying more than I need to. You are right about the dividends. However, there are times that they offer a discount coupon/code to members for both regular prices items and also at times for already discounted items. Just in case you didn't know.

In any event they do have quality stuff and some good advice whether you choose to be a member or not.

Quick tip from the King of the Internets...

Google has created a web browser (called "chrome") which uses a different twist on the usual tabbed browsing functions of most applications. It treats each tab as a separate window or application...so, when looking at a perpetually slow site it's quicker to right click and then open each link in a new tab. Chrome will work on loading each tab quicker than going forward and back in the traditional fashion and it will load new pages without slowing the first.

There are other reasons that Chrome is quicker but that's for another day....

I went to the rei store today and bought 101 clif bars at 3 cents a piece, all holiday flavors. I thought I was going to be paying 43 cents each for about a dozen and when I go to pay they ended up being 3 cents. The cashier went and got all of them from the back for me. $3.03 for 101 clif bars

The holiday Cliff bars are the best!

I have a hard time finding anything I want or need at REI other than socks, trail bars, fuel, or dehydrated meals. I suppose I am a cottage industry gear snob.

Egads, I almost never buy stuff at REI. I'm not big on gear, I don't need the latest stuff and try to limit what I need, preferring to make my own or do without. Many things I have I've found or been given, too. I like the idea of going out there with as few things as possible, not only for the lightweight aspect, but I really admire someone like John Muir who would go out with a blanket and a crust of bread. Simplicity!

Still, I'm not there yet. So I'm a fan of this sale, for the few things I need.

Picked up a 20 deg REI sleeping bag for 40 bucks and a new REI down jacket for about 30. The jacket is warm!!!!
I just bought the same one, I think. Yes, it is VERY warm! :)

I tried one of each flavor yesterday and they are way better than regular ones. I don't know why they don't run them year round. The Iced Gingerbread was my favorite.

The .83 is the sale price; as low as it's gonna go.

Not true. Just came back from the REI in Fairfax VA. Everything that ended in .83 was another 50% off of that. And I watched as each thing was rung up - everything we bought had an additional 50% taken off as long as that .83 was at the end of the price. I got $50 Columbia sweaters, marked down to $29.83, for just under $15 each, a pair of ladies $90 Merrills shoes, marked down to $24.83, for just under $13, and my husband got two pairs of Columbia Titanium lightweight zip off hiking pants, regularly $45/each, marked down to $29.83, for just under $15/each. :D

Good question. It doesn't say that anywhere. Maybe it's an in-store only thing? The store we were in was pretty packed today and we got there 20 minutes after it opened.

Wow can't wait until tomorrow when I stake out the REI down south on my road trip. Hope there's stuff left. The stuff online has already been marked down. The stuff in the store you have to do the math yourself. Changes prices on a computer is easy, but putting new tags all over the store is a bitch. Its much easier to just put a sign up that says to figure it out yourself.

But it was marked down online with .83 at the end. Yet Mrs Baggins got an additonal $$ off the .83 items. Guess it's just an instore thing. Can't wait 'til tomorrow when I go to a real store.

Besides no use of me complaining. Everything good I had in my shopping cart two days ago is gone as I was waiting to see if they might offer the deal online. I would have LOVED that 15 degree 2 lb down bag for $42 too. :)

The stuff in the stores and the stuff online was the same price; it's just that the cash register in the store took off 50% when you checked out, some web nerd took 50% off the marked down prices on the web. This isn't some grand conspiracy.

???????

I work for a company I won't name that rhymes with "Fun Microsystems"
Except it ain't fun and I am not sure how they make money... Ahem.

Anyway, I suppose at REI I'd be making less money..but suppose my job would make more sense. :)

If I ran REI, it'd all be stuff from cottage manufacturers, odd ball gear makers no one has ever heard of in the general public, used equipment and thrift store finds with a sprinkling off Target/Walmart/military surplus items. I'd also be in business for about 2 days (at the most!) because it is overpriced clothing that really fuels the outdoor retail market. ;)

Not sure what I really need this point in terms of gear. A lightweight two person tent, maybe. But, REI won't sell the kind I'd buy....

As for mountain house meals vs Freezer Bag Cooking...

I'm odd. I'm one of the few backpackers who does not buy specialty food (based on this website and my friends here in town). There are these huge places called grocery stores now that sells food you can take on backpacking trips. Pretty reasonably priced, too. :)

I shopped online today and bought an REI day pack, a pair of REI sahara pants, a wool sherpa hat, a 3 1/2" x 25" x 76" self inflating mat for my cot, 2 REI wicking T's, 2 lexan soup spoons and a container of 20 cutter insect repellent wipes.
The packs normal price was $79.95...I got it all for $83.04!!!!!! plus free shipping to the Pittsburgh store.

I went to the Fairfax store as well and picked up a pair of REI Sahara convertibles for $15, pair of Ex Officio pants for $15, pair of Vasque Kota XCR's for $30, some backcountry gourmet (something like that) meals for $1.50 each just for fun...

..oh, and a Pocket Rocket...but not sale on despite my logical argument in favor of selling it to me for 1/2 off...

We've had the REI credit card and get a juicy refund towards gear every Spring, but frankly I often have trouble finding something I want to buy there. It's mostly very mass-market, top-dollar retail Chinese-made disposible stuff. Not my first choice!

Having said that I dropped $400 on the sale; finally some acceptable prices from REI! Avery rare occurrence indeed.

Picked up the UL45 myself, I am sure its worth the $34. How has your performed?
I can't say I have used it extensively, but the few trips I've had it on, I have absolutely loved it more than anything else I've used. It's incredibly comfortable. Great design. I like it. The model I have is older and a different material, and the material isn't quite as sturdy as what the bag is made of now. Truth be told, I was going to buy myself a new one, but sometime between deciding that and checking out, they sold out. :|

Hope everyone gets something they like and need at the big sale.

Having taken a look at the "sale" I'd say you'll have to be very lucky if you actually find what you need on sale.

Packs are a good example: there are 8 on sale ... only 2 on "super sale" and both of these are small women's daypacks. So, you aren't likely to find the pack you want on sale.

Someone should mention to REI that there's a depression on and fake "sales" of closed out inventory taking up valuable space aren't going to cut it in the new economy where nobody has a job.

Shoppers have, by necessity, become much more saavy.

Hey Johnny-come-lately...All the useful things I picked up on Thursday are GONE and no longer listed on the website. I'll agree that some of the things I bought were frivolous...the 83 cent origami cup...or the spring-assist pocket knife I'd be spying since Panzer pulled one on me and stole my beef jerky...but I got new goretex boots and new poles to replace the ones I lost in hitch for less than $60 total.

You just looked too late. Sorry, duder.

Probably because nothing else is left -- more common sizes in everything disappear first. I had to order pants a size too big, or not order any at all. If you're willing to carry a bit more weight in exchange for saving money, get the bag. Otherwise, wait for the next sale.

I found a Hubba Hubba 2008 model for $99 and some change. I also finally picked up a larger cook set for 12 bucks. I moved to Denver, Colorado this July and my first scarf was a joke...got a polertec scarf for 10 bucks and a VERY WARM hat for 12 bucks. Spent 148 bucks total. I would have bought a down sleeping bag(15 degrees) but I couldn't justify it when I have a 30 degree that just needs the zipper fixed and plan on buying a reactor bag liner. If I knew more about snowshoes and skiing/snowboarding I would have lost my mind!

I have been a hammock advocate, but needed to switch back to a tent for hiking here (CDT and such). I have drooled over the Hubba and the Hubba Hubba since 2005. I resigned myself to the fact that I was gonna get the Rei Quarter Dome. It's cheaper. I walked in Rei and KNEW I was asking for trouble. There were 2 Hubba Hubbas and the other got snatched up really quick!

My tent brings a tear to my eye everytime I walk to the restroom...because it's in the hallway and i have to HOLD IT. :)

Eh, I wouldn't buy a long, and I'm 5'7". It's just extra space you have to heat, making the bag less efficient and wasting energy.

but i was teased by a super clearance sign hanging above a bunch of tent signs, i got really excited forgetting about the whole ending in .83, then the rei guy walks up and takes down the sign, apparently it had confused a bunch of people, myself included

If I were to use the bag for winter, a long might be handy. You would have extra space for boots, clothing, and water without having to pull your feet up.
