I am wondering how many people take a video camera a taper their Hike. I love to save weight but I really would love to have the memories for my family and I. I also want to do some talks to my local schools to educate them what the AT is and to get kids involved into hiking.

Most digital still cameras also take video and lots of people do it that way.

You could use it at opportune moments and bounce it most of the way. i.e. shoot some footage at Springer and Katahdin of course, and pick important and/or scenic places along the way along with a few average ones to give an overview of the trail without carrying the camcorder the whole way.

I ust started using video camera to tape landscape and other folks' hike. The weight is literally nothing, even less than my old still PS camera. See http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=8198552921665291488. I have it from my credit card award. The points would expire if I didn't use them by certain date.

The resolution is pretty high, 720 x 480, similar to an old CRT TV set, and better than most PS cameras, I think. It can alos take a still shot, 1 MP, not that good. Everything is convenient. One drawback like other image capturing devices, is the battery life. Go to Amzon to find a non OEM's.

Doggiebag, a WB member, seems to use a cell camera to video quite a bit. He has a couple of journals with embedded mpgs, and I think they are very enjoyable to watch. You might look them up to see what he does with them.
