I've searched and read the helpful threads on here about buying a food dehydrator. I was wondering if anyone knows of any current good deals? Thanks :)

Got mine at a yard sale for 4 bucks. :)

Are the Nesco one's ok? I got your book for Chistmas by the way. I am very pleased!!

Nesco's are great - if you get one that isn't the bottom base one. Adjustable temp setting and a fan and you are good to go. They run about $45 to 70.

Got mine at Walmart for ~$30. It is a Nesco with a top dehydrating unit and four trays. It has worked so well that I bought one for Mom and one for the boytoy. Mom loves hers.

Thanks guys. I was hoping somebody might have one marked way down right now :) Y'all have given me some good information that I will definitely follow up on. I'm glad to hear everyone seems happy with the cheaper versions.

Check Sears on line. I bought one in august for my son, I believe it was a Golden Harvest. Very nice, good quality and msrp of $79.95. On sale , on line only for $29.95. I have 3 total, one from this same company and no problems.

Glad to hear that Sarbar. If you say it is good than I know I'll be happy with it.

Thanks for the heads up Jim Adams, I checked Sears. They have a lot of Nesco stuff and very decent prices, but this other place seems to have the best current deal.

Yeah, that may have just been a one time deal and I looked at the right time...just thought that they may have other deals going on now. As long as you purchase a quality dehydrator of almost any type, you will probably be happy. The main differences with quality deal with efficiency.
Enjoy!

I've had my eye on this one: http://www.amazon.com/Nesco-FD-80-American-Square-Shaped-Dehydrator/dp/B00179DCCQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1231528835&sr=1-1 for a while. I'm waiting for it to go on sale. :)

I've got a Nesco 75... a little higher wattage. I like the fan and heater element on top. I like the fact the link you listed has the jerky gun with it... (I just bought a jerky gun for Christmas!) But, I don't see where the one you listed has the extra pans for dehydrating apple sause (fruit roll ups!) or the screens (bananas!) Buying a jerky gun later may be cheaper than adding extra trays, etc.

I checked he site where I bought mine on sale a year ago... no longer. Sorry!

I love my dehydrator:D (I type while munching dehydrated snacks!) and I know you'll love yours!

Thanks for the input. I had to end up buying a extra tray for $11, otherwise I would of have to paid $10 for shipping. Apparently the big red "free shipping" banner has exceptions :)
I will definitely be making bananas, so I'll have to look into that. As far as the jerky gun, it will never ever get used. I may try to sell it? I didn't realize people buy them separately.

Don't know anything about the company, but here's what I got when I google-ed the dehyrator I've got with 2 screens and 2 fruit trays.

$54.99 free shippin

Lean hamburger makes good jerky... you can hand roll it, or use the jerky gun... kinda like a caulking gun with different tips.

Hmmm... same site you had... advertises free shipping, but doesn't give it.

Mercy I made quite a bit of dried hamburger but never balled or made strips, why would you want to do that?

Yep, the free shipping is deceiving. It is only for certain items, or if you spend $60 or whatever then most items ship free... On the positive though, I ordered this afternoon and have already received an email with my UPS tracking #.

From what I understand, above all else you want one with a temperature control and a fan, square better than round.

Btw, this is my baby:

I have the #528 - the #306220 wasn't sold when I got mine. Sigh! Oh to have an excuse to upgrade once again...... :p

I also have the Nesco one as well.

Woo,

Dehydrated hamburger is great to add to meals.... but I eat snacks all the time (!) and like my little meat sticks make great snacks to munch on while on the move.

My favorite is cutting more solid meat strips, but I like the hamburger ones too.

When drying fruit, do you guys soak in ascorbic acid first? If so, where do you buy it from? :)

Farr Away
01-15-2009, 12:51
I typically just use some lemon juice in water, or pineapple juice. You could also crush vitamin c tablets in water. Vitamin c is ascorbic acid.

Mercy

I don't use anything on strawberries, bananas, apples...

dradius
01-15-2009, 14:49
Thanks for the replies. I read about lemon juice but also read that it "is only 1/6th as effective as ascorbic acid." who knows. i don't care about the food browning, but if it is true that soaking helps maintain some of the vitamins, I'll check it out. i was just curious what you other guys do. i'm a dehydration noob :)

I just dip mine in lemon or lime juice :) And only on stuff that browns (pears, apples, etc). Strawberries are so hard to not eat while they are drying :D

I get 20% off one item coupons from Bed, Bath, and Beyond on a regular basis. I don't remember if I signed up at the store,or online for them but they come like once a month or so.

I used that on my dehydrator at Bed, Bath, and Beyond. It took a good chunk off the price. It was $60 originally. so, $48 on sale, not too bad.

I haven't done any dehydrating but am considering getting into it. I have a question. Has anyone tried dehydrating chicken pot pies after they are cooked? I like the Marie Callender's brand cpp. Plus they have 640 calories. They are a little heavy before they are cooked. How heavy would they be after dehydrating and is the taste restored after preparing them on the trail? Thanks.
