Any of you DIY have a suggestion for where to purchase bulk outdoor material. eg non coated ripstop. Would my local fabrics store be an option or is this a specialized material since it isnt woven?

Also, Im partial to synthetics: Would polarguard be a good light weight material to substitute instead of down. Trying to keep the mess down as my previous adventure with pillows and such warranted finding feathers for months scattered and stuck to pretty much the whole inside of the house.

Thanks

For bulk, I would order from Seattle Fabrics or Quest Outfitters. I think they both have wholesale pricing.

2nd for Seattle Fabrics. They have a fantastic & well organized website, and good customer service if you need it. I've ordered a ton of stuff from them over the years and have never had a problem.

Also check out Green Pepper's website for fabric & good ideas.

I made a synthetic quilt and posted the details here (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=38424&highlight=quilt).

Seattle Fabrics is expensive. Try Outdoor Wilderness Fabrics (http://www.owfinc.com/) or as mentioned, Quest Outfitters (http://www.questoutfitters.com/).

The trick I read for down stuffing was to;
1. Set up a tent
2. Climb in with tape, vacuum cleaner, down, and pice to be stuffed.
3. Completly zip up tent.
4. When done stuffing tape stuff holes shut and vacuum up before unzipping the tent.

Using synthetics saves this hasle but down has a longer life span. Good Luck.

Another good source is Ed Speer at Speer Hammocks (http://www.speerhammocks.com). Plenty of DIY goodies (http://www.speerhammocks.com/Products/Supplies.htm) there.

Thanks guys and gals. I have been in contact with seattle fabrics. I will try outdoor wilderness fabrics also.

Yes, I understand down has a longer life but I am interested in cuttin my teeth with syn fill bc of the hassle and mess of down. I am sewing a underquilt first for a backpacker HH asym. I might give the down a go for the top quilt im sure ill end up making. For now a sleeping bag will suffice as a top quilt. THanks again for the quick responses and great tips
