Here are 6 of the most significant Sierra passes you'll get to hike across. You hear about them from time to time, but this is what they look like and where they're located. This should stir that mid-winter, pre-thru-hike excitement...

Nice pics. Was the snow still firm enough to support your weight in June?

Only 1 of those photos is mine, but I've hiked those passes over a 7 day period. Those are spring snow conditions and the snow is well consolidated. Except for mid-late afternoon or around warming objects do you posthole.

It's pretty amazing, you can walk for miles and miles on that stuff and you don't have too many problems. It is exhausting though, as it's always a bit slushy and slippery walking on the edges of sun cups. You're lucky to get in 18 mile days hiking on snow.

The photo for Mather actually has me in the foreground, in the orange shirt.

And actually, that's looking north in Goodtimes' mather pass shot. That's why we're descending, we're all northbound thru-hikers. I guess you could call it looking northwest, but it's definitely not south. :P

Yeah, north, that's what I meant.

It has been corrected. Thanks for pointing that out!
