I understand some of it is above tree line. I do not mind using my sticks on occasion but if it is gonna be night after night perhaps i should think tent.

How dry is the month of August. Perhaps cowboy camping under the stars??

Any info much appreciated.

HH,

It's definitely been done. Here's a link to a 2003 journal (http://www.jmthiker.com/intropage.html) by three people all hanging on the JMT. By all the reports I've seen, August is fairly dry but it also looks like there's no shortage of trees down in the valleys where the campsites are anyway (at least the ones with bear boxes.) There's water in plenty, of course, but it looks like August is reasonably dry.

I hiked the JMT this past September, and I passed several people 'hangin'. I don't see any issue with it as long as you are willing to adjust your daily mileage if needed to camp near trees.

I don't know about August, but I cowboy camped 19 out of 20 days in September.

Thanks, that the info I wanted to hear... :)

It is still just thinking about it, but if the knee keeps healing it could be a reality.
