I am trying to plan a quick trip in early May and have an eye set on the Wild Oak Trail in Virginia (26 miles - 3/4 days). Does anyone have any knowledge on this trail? We would just like to confirm water sources because we've found some conflicting claims and can't get our hands on a guide book for at least a week. Any information/advice/warnings/etc would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks! :banana

About 1/4 of this trail goes through the Ramsey's Draft area which is pretty well described in Karin Wuertz-Schaefer's "Hiking Virginia's National Forests." I don't know anything about the other 3/4 of this trail. Folks on the message board at PATC's website often talk about Ramsey's: http://www.hypernews.org/HyperNews/get/trails/PATC.html
Maybe you could post this question there as well as someone in PATC is probably knoweldegable about the whole Wild Oak Trail.

Also, the Dry River Ranger District station probably has good info. (540)828-2591; http://www.fs.fed.us/gwjnf
I have the Out There guidebook to Virginia also. It has a passage on the WOT, but the passage is short and in general this whole book is not nearly detailed enough for backcountry use.

The Ramsey's Draft (Augusta/Highland Counties) area is beautiful. The Alleghenies are beautiful. Its a shame that the AT largely misses them. You just get a little taste in Southwest Virginia. Enjoy your hike.
