How many pairs of shoes did any thru hiker go through on the trail and is it safe to say get pairs of shoes for later in the trail that are 1/2 size bigger? Thanks!

I used four pairs of New Balance 810s on the AT, all the same size. If you're new to distance hiking, I'd suggest you buy as you go. The pair and size you start with may not work, and it might not just be the size. You need a combination of ventilation, width, weight, support, and the right "feel". My first long hike I found the right shoe on the fourth pair I tried, 2000 miles into it.
My feet grew a little on my first hike, but not since. Good luck!
